WHEREAS Christopher Columbus led the expedition on which he said in his personal diary he was led by the Holy Spirit of God and which became the gateway for the first large-scale Christian colonization of the Americas, and

WHEREAS Columbus said, “It was the Lord who put it into my mind, (I could feel His hand upon me), the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because He comforted me with rays of marvelous inspiration from the Holy Scriptures….” And

WHEREAS Columbus Day has been long celebrated in America as a Christian holiday, and

WHEREAS 92 percent of Americans self-identify as Christians, and

WHEREAS Columbus Day is, and should be, celebrated as a federal holiday, and

WHEREAS the Mississippi Constitution begins with the words, “We, the people of Mississippi in convention assembled, grateful to Almighty God, and invoking his blessing on our work, do ordain and establish this constitution,” signifying our heritage as the people of the Great State of Mississippi as that of being a Christian people,

BE IT RESOLVED that Columbus Day be declared a state holiday in the Great State of Mississippi and that the date of its annual celebration coincide with the federal observance of said holiday.
