You would do a disservice not only to babies, but to the all the beneficiaries of your good work, who need a united front on issues of human dignity. Thank you.
AI has no business denying amnesty to any member of the human race. By considering to allow abortion, they are denying amnesty to the most vulnerable humans.
Amnesty International is in the business of preventing humans from being killed or exploited. It should remember that abortion kills children and exploits women. Feminists and others say abortion is liberation, but the loss of a child is a major blow in all parts of the undeveloped world. I know because I have worked in Africa.
I support this petition. I am Gay Socialist who is Pro life. Do not make Abortion a Human Right! If that happens the Death Penalty and any other civil wrong can become a Human Right.
My reply to AI:
Dear Ms. Ross,
Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately, your explanation only fuels my conviction
that this issue will embroil Amnesty in controversy lasting into the infinite future and at the
expense of human rights generally.
Regretably, the A.I. position expressed in your letter does not even mention the rights of the child.
According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child
'...the child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth.'
Human rights are determined by natural law, not by a vote by some subset of A.I. members. Children have rights independently of any decision by A.I supporters. The A.I. position contradicts its own charter and puts it at odds with the majority on this planet who see clearly that abortion is infanticide. I sincerely hope that A.I. will reconsider its position on this issue.
Yours Sincerely
Dr. Philip Pennance
because I believe that AI does important work in this world preserving the basic fundamental right to life of all human beings, and this new policy would compromise that position.
I have participated in Amnesty International campaigns for 30 years. If AI goes the route of aabortion advocacy, it will lose the universal respect and influence it now enjoys, and sink into partisan irrelevancy. This would be a HUGE LOSS for human rights, for conscience, and for the suffering and oppressed people of world.
I have always thought that Amnesty International was apolitical, and yet, with this proposed endorsement of so-called abortion rights, Amnesty International will be slipping into the mire of the worst kind of politics imaginable -- the kind that imposes death upon another human being. Don't do it.
I have supported AI for all my adult life; I cannot remain if it views legal abortion as a human right, rather than a moral tragedy, for mother and unborn.
because AI's move towards supporting the violence of abortion would contradict and undermine it's entire mission. I would be unable to support any action of AI if this shift takes place.
I've been involved in letter writing campaigns with AI and have always held in high esteem the work AI has done in the past. I would like to continue my involvement with AI, but only if they remain neutral on abortion.
We figth against dicatorship in Chile, defending the rigth to life. Now, we continue the defense of the human life and dignity since the conception. We demand the respect of the life of all humans, and unborns are humans too.
I have supported AI for many years, first as part of their Urgent Action Network and more recently on the death penalty. I want them to remain consistent on life issues, or at least not adopt positions that force me to choose between my own consistency and supporting AI
I sincerely hope that you do not take a position for abortion as a human right. Your admirable work against violence would be compromised once you sanction the violence of abortion against the living, but yet unborn, child.
It is my opinion that
abortion is not a human right but rather a destruction of rights for others. As a secularist pro life advocate i plead my case, please do not support abortion.
For more than fifteen years I contributed monthly to AI. I have written letter on behal of prisoners of conscience. This action undermines AI's credibility as a human rights organization.
The signer is national coordinator of the organization Catholics Against Capital Punishment. In recent years, members of CACP have worked closely with AI-USA on its "National Weekend of Faith in Action on the Death Penalty" initiative.
I am a progessor at Georgetown University and was at one time the faculty moderator of Amnesty International. I am simple appalled that AI would claim murder to be a human right!
Having participated in Amnesty International's religious Urgent Action network for years, I do hope that AI maintains its neutrality in the Abortion debate. I believe that if I believe in the sacredness of life then violence is not an option in any situation. We need to find another way and provide more options for people whether in international disputes or personal crises.
It is truly tragic when Amnesty International fails to protect the most vulnerable of humans - those within the womb. If AI goes a step further and deliberately disenfranchises them by supporting abortion as a 'right', you will not only lose my support, but will also gain a staunch opponent.
I had urged Amnesty International to stand up for imprisoned gays, gays imprisoned for being gay. Now I ask AI to not abandon the most vulnerable of human beings. I wish you were prolife, but at the minimum do not support abortion.
I have donated money and written letters for Amnesty International in the past. I have always considered it a fine human-rights organization, and would be grieved if it decided as a matter of policy to exclude some members of the human family from the circle of those accorded human rights.
