because although I do not support the abolition of the death penalty, I find it abhorrent that a group dedicated to preserving life would consider supporting abortions on demand. There is a decided difference between the taking of an innocent life for the sake of convenience and the consequence of a crime committed.
If we can sue on behalf of a baby who was killed in uterp, & if we can peform surgery on a baby in utero, why would we choose to attack it? AI should be dedicated to defending all rights to life.
AI stands up for those who have no voice. AI is rightly against violence, torture, the death penalty and stands for other noble causes. AI should also stick up for the defenseless: the unborn.
AI should always stand for the protection of human life, whether it is pre-born or not. To do otherwise causes AI to loose its credibility to millions of supporters.
the moral test of any society is the way it treats its most vulenerable members. I will not be able to offer any support to an organization that has decided that the weakest human beings are disposable.
I value AI's public stands and its tremendous work to foster greater awareness of global injustice. We all benefit. Please continue to stand up for life.
I realize that abortion is a disputed issue; for that reason I think AI's neutral stance is the best possibility. It is important in this age of repression not to lose supporters and/or clarity. I believe that as time passes we will come to understand the violence of abortion, and I know that I cannot support a group working for abortion as a right!
I've been a member of both the Geneva and Ithaca AI chapters in the past. AI must never turn its back on the innocent preborn child. The candle must never be extinguished.
I have been a member of AI for many years and a monthly contributor to the Prisoners of Conscience program. I will, of course, discontinue all contributions and encourage my family and friends to do likewise should Amnesty make this PC move in support of abortion "rights." Consistency demands respect for the unborn.
The history of the movement for human rights involves the struggle to progressively broaden of our understanding of what it means to be human. Women, children, other races and nationalities, enemy soldiers, condemned criminals have all gradually over time been acknowledged as human and granted rights. The fight to recognize the humanity of an unborn child is a current front line of that continuing struggle.
I support this petition because as a member of Democrats for Life and Pro life contact for the Apostleship of the Sea it is inconsistent with what AI has always stood for. We need to support amnesty for women who have made the tragic error or have been coerced into abortion but we cannot support the act of abortion. Human rights begin at conception. Keep doing what you've always been exemplary at: protecting life, even lives of those we disagree with or those whose life have gone astray. Peace in the womb, in ourselves our families and then the world. Carol
I have responded to AI requests for letters both to prisoners and on their behalf, and the work against the death penalty is dear to my heart. My car sports an AI decal, and I have frequently decorated envelopes with the extras I have received. Supporting prisoners is not pro-choice; it is pro-life. Although I would continue to support prisoners and work against the death penalty, I could no longer support AI if it abandoned its neutrality on the abortion issue.
I support this petition as a Democrat, a Harvard Graduate student studying government, and as someone who supports and has volunteered my time for Amnesty International.
Just as I write letters for Amnesty campaigns opposing violence against political prisoners, I now write to oppose making the killing of unborn children a "right".
Having been a churchworker in Central America during all of the very turbulent 1980s, I have always admired AI's defense of the defenseless. I find the position they are adopting on abortion disturbing and contradictory to what I had assumed was a defense of life in all situations.
