Unbelieveably it sounded like 99% of police across the USA is totally ignorant. This obviously indicated a complete failure of Police Academy to cover this such culture first before getting a job as a police officer... Pretty scary really!!!
Kathy HUghes--- Hope and pray that Doug Bahl have the right to have fair and justice in the court system... The Polices should be educated about being aware about the deaf culture and their disabilities. thank you
THATS NOT RIGHT TO BRUTYALITY AGAINST DEAF . DEMAND TO HAVE COMMUNCATION BY SIGN LANGUAGE AND INTEPRETER . POLICES SHOULD HAVE TO LEARN SIGN LANGUAGE THEY DONT UNDERSTAND DEAF CULTURES . THATS SHAME
Why were there injuries to Mr Bahl's head which have not yet been explained? The district attorney should consider bringing charges against the police officers.
As a law-abiding deaf person, it always terrifies me when I learn of cases in which an interaction between the police and a deaf person goes poorly. It makes me afraid for what could happen to me if I were to encounter police officers in the wrong kind of situation. What if they don't realize that my failure to understand them is only because I'm deaf and can't hear them -- not because I'm ignoring them or refusing to comply? If I don't understand them and if they don't understand my first attempt to explain that I'm deaf, then how can I continue trying to get that concept across to them in a way that also keeps me safe? And if something were to happen (mistaken identity, say) and I were brought to the police station, would they ensure my equal access to communication or would I be thrown in jail for a full weekend without even being allowed to make a phone call (i.e., with ACCESSIBLE technology), like Doug Bahl?
It's time for the law enforcement to have training in how to communicate with deaf people. This was an outrage about Doug Bahl and his arrest!
there is many reason where is NO communication out there that police need to learn how to use and how to contact interpreter for deaf's communcation if police learn sign language that will be great! but MAIN IMPORTANT IS WE ALL HAVE RIGHTS LIKE OTHERS!
I support the expression of outrage, and suggest these so-called police be suspended, and the whole department be subject to training in deafness issues.
Yes, please allow this petition to ensure that every police officer in this country (as well as other countries) be more aware of Deaf people's rights and needs for equal communication through Sign Language.
This is terrible. Police brutality needs to stop. The guy is Deaf for crying out loud. You don't pepper spray someone in the eyes if they don't respond!!! Then telling him he can't contact his friends or family, he has a right to 1 phone call. This is shameful
really nothing news to USA deaf situation and need amercian law enforcement officer awake up deaf community reaction and grow lose to faith cops or law officer future !
same before one guy deaf happen in bakersfield,Ca I never forget about that story . I dont know why Police or sheriff want hurt on deaf ppl for No Reason .. or Maybe they have no patient commiucation with deaf ppl ?? who know .. need stop abuse on deaf ppl in any states.
I know him through St. Paul Techincal College, supporting him on the way. I hope Doug Bahl will win this case because I felt police don't know nothing about Deaf's way of communcation.
I think the police should not beat deaf people up for no reason. They should listen and understand what deaf people explain or feeling. Police is doing wrong to brutality deaf. Deaf people are innocent. STOP! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
It should have use tty for contact his family and lawyer It is discrimination by this police, and what about miranda right? Police has no right to stop this deaf person from contact his family and lawyer.
I agree that police department needs sensitivity traning how to approach a deaf citizen. This situation have happened all over the nation for years now, especially with communication barriers.
Too often law enforcement people get away from laws. Ironic, they are power abused to any minorities and disabilities. Enough and Stand up Look Jenell 6
Negligence of basic restraint on cop's part before resorting to force in order to ensure a person needs to communicate other than by speaking is objectable!
