In the State of North Carolina (and elsewhere), there exists a disheartening gap between "animal rights" and "human rights". Poisoning your neighbor's dog is considered a felony offense, yet in many instances of domestic violence, the abuser is charged with a misdemeanor.

The students of Belmont Abbey College (Charlotte, N.C.) view this as a disgrace to the victims of domestic violence, and as a sad commentary on the workings of our Justice system.
