I DON'T support this - Johnny wasn't a racist - he was playing on Don Rickles tendency to poke fun at anyone of any race in his audience. You'd have to see Rickle's show to understand where Johnny was coming from. He knew a camera was on him - he would never have said those things and meant them if he wasn't parodying Rickles' comedic style. And, Rickles loved everyone - he just showed how stupid saying those things really was.

I listened to Don Rickles for the first time tonight. I looked him up immediately, and found that he has recently been the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the Disney film, Toy Story I and II. I can't believe Disney or NBC would employ him in the 1970s or now. I am disgusted.

To begin with, there was never, repeat, never a sketch on The Tonight Show called "Hang A Darkie" and anyone who claims otherwise is either very mis-informed or a liar. Here's the whole truth: Carson noticed that the cigarette box kept on his desk had been broken. He in turn found out that Don Rickles had broken it while serving as guest host the previous night. Carson then learned that Rickles was shooting his current show C.P.O. Sharkey in the next studio. Carson took his box and had the cameras follow him to the next studio. Rickles and Harrison Page were in the middle of a scene when Carson walked onto the set. Both Rickles and Page were both caught off guard by the surprise appearence of Carson. Carson then went into a impromptu impression of "Rickles" and that's when the exchange between Carson, Rickles and Page took place. The comments were no different than Rickles is/was known to do in his act. Those are the facts. If you chose to ignore them, that's your choice (ignorant though it may be.) It's amazing that someone would actually believe that Harrison Page, let alone Carson and Rickles would willingly participate in a scripted piece of material called "Hang a Darkie." The thought is so absolutely absurd, I am inclined to believe that whomever started this idiotic petition did so either as thier warped idea of what a joke is or some insignificant parasite who's trying to grab their 15 minutes by exploiting the death of Carson.
