To the Committee on Education and Labor-

As our collective representatives on the education committee, we recommend a course of action on behalf of the secondary education students from all of the United States. We feel that there is a lack of representation for the challenges facing students that seek to obtain a degree in higher education. It is our concern that the secondary education system has been sold out to those seeking profit.

With an economic system in drastic need of rebuilding, it seems you have lost focus on the future of America. Great civilizations are measured on their academic superiority, because the success of them depends on it. We encourage you to help the truly financially distressed college student. We have been marginalized and set aside as an afterthought for decades. Each year tuition goes up, endowments grow greater, loan companies make profit, while we get impoverished.

Many college students live off of money that is borrowed in the hopes being able to use a superior education to keep America at the top. As federal interest rates decrease on those distressed, where is our help? We advise a restructuring of the student loan industry that is beneficial to students and not multi-billion dollar companies. Education should not be made a game of numbers for loan companies to profit excessively from. Some on your committee have even received handsome contributions from loan companies.

If the government decides to take the rout approving a “bailout” package, students should be represented. One recommendation would be forgiving a fair amount of federal loans for new graduates. Not only do we inherit a culture of debt and greed from your generation, but a desperate economy with slim job opportunities. Over the years rising tuition at state schools has been the answer to statewide budget deficits. We say no more! Do not solve your generation’s problems by shifting the debt to us.

In our society, secondary education is almost a requirement. As a result, most students are eager to broaden our knowledge at any cost. Private loan companies know this as well, taking every opportunity to profit at our expense. College tuition payments are not what they used to be. No longer is it feasible to be able to pay our own way when tuition exceeds our part time earning potential. Very few of us are lucky enough to have our families pay our way, creating yet another generation of Americans gridlocked in debt.

As a result of being spread thin throughout the country, college students do not have as strong of a voice as is necessary, and we are too young to run for congress and take your jobs. We hereby petition the committee, as the voice of students from all corners of the country, to provide us with adequate representation, making college costs reasonable, loan companies responsible, and basic necessities affordable to our kind.
