Fellow Americans,
On Election Day, how many of you are able to make it to the polls? Are any of you able to cast your votes, or are you occupied with work, school or kids?
Under the Constitution, Election Day is held the 1st Tuesday of November. But this is mostly an aukward day of the week. Plus, the polls are only open usually between 7am-5pm. This makes voting very inconvenient.
In most of the western nations, their election day is a national holiday. Why isn't ours? If Election Day became a holiday like MLK Day, I truly belive many more Americans would be able to exercise their God-given right to vote.

I also bring up another matter. In a recent poll, the voter turnout in America was 40%. In Belgium, it was 90%. This is shameful. How many years have women, blacks and other groups fought for their rights to vote. The freedom to vote is one of our most cherished rights. To the rest of the world (mainly the EU), our low voter-turnout makes us look like lazy, incompitent people.
We must show the rest of the world that we do care about our government and we do vote.

Along with my proposal for Election Day to become a national holiday, I also propose that when a person reaches the legal age of 18, they should automatically receive a voter-registration form in the mail.
America, when you turn 18, are you going to go out of your way to a voting office to sign up and fill out forms?
If you look at today's generation, the last thing on their mind is voting.
But if they receive a voter-registration form in the mail, it would help raise the percentage of registered voters. Afterall, 18-yr old men receive the Selective Service form in the mail. Why not a voter-registration form as well?
