As shown by the Kelo case in New London, Connecticut, significant checks need to be placed on the rights of public and private entities to seize individuals' property. This can include residences and businesses.

Currently, governments reserve the right to seize property, offering a nominal compensation to the owner. If the owner rejects the offer, eminent domain is brought into play, forcing private residents and small business owners to relocate. This can be a great hardship, since the governments make no distinctions and no exceptions for the poor, elderly, disabled, and those struggling to maintain a commercial relationship with the community.

Laws need to be in place that will put maximum protections on the side of the property owners. Governments and private businesses often use tax revenues as a rationale for such property seizures. It stands to reason that if a person secured a home or business in a particular location, they should be able to continue there with the assurance that they will not, at some future time, be judged inadequate to support the tax structure of the community. Neighborhoods change, and change is often for the better, but when the beneficiary of the change is a vast, nameless, faceless group such as government or a huge corporation, even one homeowner subjected to eviction for this reason is too many.

We the undersigned urge the United States Congress to examine this issue in depth. The Supreme Court has erroneously ruled in favor of this highly damaging practice, and one of the notable dissenters on the ruling was Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who turned in her resignation immediately thereafter.

Private property ownership has been one of the fundamental principles of our American society, and we must not allow it to be whittled away.

Here in the police state of Tennessee, they have stolen too many people's homes with this bad idea. People had their businesses stolen from them to make way for a stadium that only benefits a few privileged business owners and the bureaucrats here. They are murdering the poor. They use the cops aka blue mafia, aka blue gestapo, aka blue thugs to do this and get away with it.

This is a historic moment for our individual rights -- it's time to get involved before we lose them! (Lisa Wilber is a member of the Committee for the Protection of Natural Rights in Weare, New Hampshire)
