Goal Progress:
The question is not, "Can they reason?" nor, "Can they talk?" but rather, "Can they suffer?" ~Jeremy Bentham
Hello kind friends!
I had a horrible experience a few weeks ago that brought me to tears, and ignited a passionate protest, that I know so many of you can relate too.
My girlfriend needed me to pick up her dog, Shooter from getting boarded at Pet Depot, Puppy King on Arnold Ave. Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. She was out of town and her flight was cancelled. The owner, Nat Sladkin said that the Terrier (who stayed there several times before) was vicious and that he refused to get bitten. (By the way, as a side note. They don’t even have a license to board animals, I found that out when I talked to the Ocean County Health Department) they will be fined for that. I walked in there, and Nat lead me to a closet full of crates stacked on top of each other. There was Shooter, shaking nervously and covered in his own feces. There was a dog under him, in the same horrific condition. Shooter basically jumped in my arms and did not even so much as growl at me. The room was dark, no windows and smelled rancid. The owner, frustrated at me asking where Shooter’s leash was, told me that he doesn’t have time to look for “this dog’s” leash. On my way out, I saw hundred of puppies. They were full of nervous hyperactivity, they smelled and they were clearly neglected. I was in shock. Shooter, a normally quiet calm dog was pacing in my backseat, panting and crying. I am not a Vet, but I do know when an animal is distressed. He stayed like that for a couple of days.
I would never go out of my way to take down a small business. For those of you who know me, you know I am just as compassionate to people as I am to animals. The owners here are arrogant and poor business people. How they stay in business is beyond me. He told my friend’s husband, when asked about the treatment of Shooter and myself, he said, “It doesn’t matter, I have been in business for 20 years and I will be in business for another 20 years”. He is in the business of selling puppies that are sick. He is in the business of treating animals in-humanely and cruel. If for one minute, I believed that this store owner cared for any of the animals, than I would think twice.
Nat Sladkin buys puppies exclusively from PA, mostly in Lancaster County from the Amish and Mennonite puppy mills. Sladkin refuses to register as a PA Out-of-State Dealer for the "privilege" of coming in to PA and buying puppies to transport across state lines, which he does himself. PA has tried unsuccessfully to get Sladkin to comply but the law is not really enforceable and he is defiant. Sladkin also uses as his PA "vet of record" a guy named Tom Stevenson in Honey Brook, PA. Stevenson is also the vet of record for other notorious puppy miller/broker, Joyce Stoltzfus of Peach Bottom, PA. Stevenson claims to have worked for Sladkin for over 30 years and allegedly sees the puppies Sladkin buys before he takes them out of PA. I don't believe him and feel the so-called vet health records are pre-signed and Nat can be on his way with his sick cargo every week without having the puppies checked by anyone. And records trace back to Amish puppymills!
Saldkin's NJ Vet of Record is Dr. Jerald Schreiber who practices in the back of the store under the name of Vet Depot. Schreiber also practices in Farmingdale and was the store vet for Puppies-n-Puppies in Toms River before it was closed down by the County for selling nothing but sick puppies and having terrible sanitation problems. *ResumeandShelter.com
Sladkin seems to get away with innumerable violations. The Jersey Shore Animal Shelter has had many protests at this store over the years. There are many complaints on file, both with the Ocean County Health Department and the Ocean County Consumer Affairs. Plus, Sladkin and his wife Paula have been sued many times. See files that can be obtained through the Open Public Records Act. He pays his fines and repeats the same thing over and over and over.
It’s a fact they are puppy mill puppies and it’s a fact that this store looks at these animals with dollar signs. Google this place and I promise you that you will find nothing by lawsuits, and stories of broken hearted people that had to put their dogs down because of health problems, due to puppy mill breeding. This isn’t the only store that sells puppy mill puppies, but its one that it’s in our neighborhood, and one more, supported of this horrible breeding practice. We can do something, by not supporting Pet Depot, we can do something by making complaints and as one of the women I spoke to at Ocean County Health Department said, “Its just one more round of ammunition we can use to help shut his place down”. Please tell your friends about this place of torture of the hundreds of dogs and cats. Go in there and see for yourself. Don’t buy one of these adorable puppies though. As much as you want to “save” one, you would be supporting this practice and enabling the puppy mills.
I called the Ocean County Bored of Health and made a complaint and to no surprise I am not the first. In fact, I am about the 40th person within the past 8 months!

I will also be writing to Point Beach Borough, and sending them this petition, as well as sending it in to the store. They should know that the people of this area won’t support his business of selling and buying sick animals and treating them in-humanely!

Puppy Mill Info
Puppy Mills are breeding facilities that produce purebred puppies in large numbers. The puppies are sold either directly to the public via the Internet, newspaper ads, at the mill itself, or are sold to brokers and pet shops across the country. Puppy mills have been around for years, but there are ways to put a stop to them, but I need your help.
The cruelty of puppy mills include but are not limited to, over breeding, inbreeding, minimal veterinary care, poor quality of food and shelter, lack of socialization with humans, overcrowded cages, and the killing of unwanted animals. To the naive consumer, this situation means buying a puppy facing a life of health problems or harboring genetically borne diseases that do not appear until years later. It was estimated by Time Magazine, that as many as 25% of purebred dogs were afflicted with serious genetic problems.
Unfortunately, most dogs in the Puppy Mills live there for their entire life, never having the freedom to run or play or to be loved. They live and breed over and over again until they can no longer produce anymore or are just too sick and the owners don't want to pay vet costs. That is when they are destroyed or auctioned off to other breeders or to undercover rescuers. Millions of people know about this horrifying truth about "pet shop puppies", but there are still billions who know nothing about it. I am here to spread the word and to give information to anyone who doesn't know.
