Protect Students...Enforce GSU\'s Smoking Policy

According to the American Cancer Society:

Secondhand smoke causes premature death and disease in children and in adults who do not smoke.

The scientific evidence shows that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.

Seconhand smoke causes cancer and is linked to the development of breast cancer.

Georgia State University is fully aware of the dangers of second-hand smoke. As a matter of fact there is currently a policy in place in the Student Handbook that states the following:

"To protect the health of the University Community, smoking is prohibited in all buildings of the Georgia State University campus.
In addition, the University Senate has passed a number of resolutions concerning smoking. The provisions of these resolutions which continue in effect are listed below.
• Signs will be placed in every building setting forth the fact that smoking is not allowed. (May 19, 1988)
• No-smoking clinics will be provided for members of faculty and staff through the Counseling Center or other campus agency, provided that funding can be obtained. (February 1, 1990)
• No smoking allowed within a 25-foot radius of all University building entrances. (March 24, 2003)"

As students concerned about our own individual health and the health of the entire campus, we are asking that the University enforce the smoking policy outlined in the Student Handbook by placing signs outside of the building entrances or painting a line of demarcation designating a "Clean Air Zone." We are asking that these indicators be placed 25 feet beyond the entrance to campus buildings wherever possible.
