The sentence "We cannot support Linux in a legal way." is nonsense. I feel discriminated and believe that the EU is cutting my very rights as a member of this society.
I am neither willing to pay money for Windows (i do not own it) nor am i willing to download it illegally.
This can be understood as an encouragement to steal software.
I find the wording of the FAQ really strange. Having the European Council state that linux can't be legally supported is, not only unfounded, but politically dumb. It is placing European communication dependent on United States' vendors.
I believe every citizen of Europe should have the right of free access to governmental information without being forced to pay an US monopoly for the pleasure.
Please support Ogg Theora or some other unencumbered codec which works on Linux.
This is just plain stupid! Discriminating citizens by forcing us to buy a horrible OperatingSystem(Windows) just to stay updated? PLEASE fire your IT-staff and replace them with sane peoples...
You should be supporting euro businesses and developers not furthering the monopolistic practises of a US corporation. Open standards for video streaming exist and should be supported
Please, will the EU take a consistent position on standards, openness, and a level playing field for everyone, and not pander to the whims of an illegal US Monopoly who are continuing to violate EU law, and disrespect the courts. Open standards exist that are freely and legally available to everyone, only these should be used.
Should this service be theoretically opened to all EU citizens? Then it should be technically opened too. We have (or if don't, at any point, should create) open standard formats for several types of media, video as well. (Though it is probably worthless mentioning, that if this does not work on linux officially, it will (or does) unofficially very soon)
Governments that deliver content in closed formats are acting in an illegal manner. Any government acting in an illegal manner should be removed from office immediately.
Under the circumstances the government has two options:
1) Change the format that the podcast comes in (or offer more than one format).
2) Get the vendor who owns the format to make it free and open, such that it can be implemented by anyone, at any time, under any circumstances with no limitations.
Since the current owner of the format will probably not allow item 2, item 1 is the only option, otherwise the government has to resign.
As long as democracy means equal rights for all citizens, it means equal access to government data by everyone. There are no technical, nor leagal resons preventing the governments to achieve computer software interoperability.Pattent free A/V codecs do exist in case of video transmission. (eg. Theora)
Why then does EU support Apple platform, and does not support Linux?
The market share of these systems is equal, Linux is used in many research projects around EU and is developed in a more democratic process than Mac or Windows platform.
I am deeply concerned with the current state of affairs.
Why do we even need this.
I found it so obvious to use open formats for this kind of stuff.
I feel discriminated that they try to force me to use commercial OS.
Using taxpayers money to promote the agenda of a corporation to which you owe nothing by discriminating against people who do not use its product is inexcusable. What if i used your money to build a bridge and then declared that only BMW owners can cross it? Almost everybody would protest and rightly so.The EU is not a corporation. It has to answer to its citizens. Can we have our government shamelessly supporting a company when there is a viable free alternative made by people for people ? Dont we want a pluralistic society ? Arent computers an important part of our everyday life ? Isnt your content important ? Can we ignore some people just because they are a minority ? Do the right thing , you know what that is
As an EU citizen I want to join the demand that I be supported. It is equally outrageous that a similar problem exists for my domestic parliament of the UK.
