Talk about double standards. Its OK to fine Microsoft ridiculous amounts of money for bundling certain software packages with their Operating System, but you then require that (or equivalent) software for your own purposes? Hypocritical at best.
The EU should support open standards. MS has not complied with the anti-trust rulings. It will only change it's behaviour if it is forced to realise there are alternatives
This is a shame. I'm using Linux and I always have problems with closed file formats. Now the EU use closed file formats too, finally supporting the monopoly position of
Microsoft.
I think the EU should use open file formats and I think the EU should take responsible to make every protocol used on internet is free so independed software developers can make a plugin for every OS to make the internet really free for everyone.
Supporting only propeitary codecs and taking unclear stances on electronic and computing freedoms is contrary to the ideals of the EU. I hope to see that more clear stances are taken to encourage democracy.
What are they doing?
U cant build public information on closed standards that prohibit usage, neither force buying of a certain product to take part of public information.
The video format has nothing to do with Operating Systems. It is related to standards. WMV format is not a standard format but a property format. Just use MPG format instead and the video would be playable on every platform.
If we can pay for Straatsburg, we can certainly pay for some extra codecs to support social fairness, innovation (and future proofness). Lets not worry about bandwidth or the waste of a couple of CPU cycles, but instead support open technologies, as they are vital for European (and global) society and economy.
The thing is that the EU doesn't have to support a specific platform (Linux, Win, Mac...), but a standard! With a standard the platform will not matter and everyone will be able to use the service, and that goes for any kind of service (document formats...etc). What would it'd be the internet now if wasn't based in a standard?
1. Ther should not be any discrimination by operating system (I have no money nor will to buy some OS if I can have it for free).
2. Why use proprietary format [of a non-EU owner] when there's plenty of alternatives?

I agree fully to this:
The "Streaming Service of the Council of the European Union" should be available for everybody and not only for Mac and MS Windows users.
Change the service in that way, that also linux/bsd/.. user can use it.
One Solution would be to use the free theora codec for the videos.
Proprietary data formats block further development of new technologies! Don't think you can influence the Europeans' preferences towards free software this stupid way!
There are free alternatives. If the council think that there isn't it should spend money to create one. Give the tax money to developers not greedy US corporations.
