just what they said. streaming video is not illegal on any Operatiing system. you just need to choose the format that is not illegal to use. that is up to the makers of the stream. they should use an open standard and or free to use formats, that will work on any system. there is more that just the mainstream closedsource, non free standards an formats.

Public bodies, especially democratically elected ones, have a duty to ensure that their communications are accessible to all without requiring purchase of licenses. The use of the proprietary Windows Media formats by the Council of the European Union prevents many of their citizens from accessing the media. Use of a free (no cost) and fair alternative which has multiple implementations would open up access to all citizens of the EU and indeed the whole world.

#5654

Peter Tuharsky said 01/02/07, 1:53 pm (verified)
I thought that no discrimination is legal in EU. However, this clearly is a discrimination on economical basis, and moreover, disruption of citizen information rights. Forcing citizens to use the product of specified company, supporting the monopol from government position, is also far from democracy principles.

Democracy relies on open communication to citizens. Using closed data formats is not open communication. I know trade-offs have to be made, but please give Linux-users the same possibilities as others. There are many reasons for choosing for a certain operating system, like price, ease of use and end-user license agreement (with which I don't always agree in the case of Windows Media Player).

#5637

Berteaux Michaël said 01/02/07, 1:44 pm (verified)
