Proprietary formats are against public interest. They should never be used and should be outlawed. To own a format is like to own a language, a word, an expression.
It's sad to know that the European Union on one side tries to stop Microsoft from abusing of its dominant position in the market, but on the other side strengthens its monopoly using its proprietary file format that discriminates Linux, BSD, Solaris and other operative system users.
The solution is using a free (as in "free speech") file format like Ogg-Theora.
