On one hand, UE Council blame M$ for being too closed about their technologies, on the other hand, they don't try to use open technologies for their own broadcasts. Completely paradoxal.
And they hide behind "laws" but I'm pretty sure the real reason is elsewhere.
I'm not a second-class citizen of the European Union. Everybody should be able to see these PUBLIC programs, the technical issue is just an excuse for a badly designed website...
Matters of such an importance should be viewable whatever your OS is, free or not.
I personnally use windows but feel myself in solidarity with the Linux users who express their right to have it all viewable legally on their systems.
One hand does not what the other one is doing. One hand is suing Microsoft for monopolistic and anti-competitive behaviour, the other hand is reinforcing the very same monopoly!!!
It should support not only Linux, but BSD, Solaris, mobile OSes (!) and as many other as it is possible. What means open codec. If you see no way to support it legally, change what is legal.
It's my choise, which Operatin System i use. According to that fact it's my believe, that it is the duty!!! of this Council to make these services available in non-proprietary formats.
Cant't support Linux legal? You must not use propietary codes! There are enough free codes suitable for all systems. Why is there a preference for Microsoft Codes? Are you paid from them? There are enough OpenSource solutions!
Diversity is a defining characteristic of the EU. Nobody would tolerate preferences being given to one particular group - either national, political, religious or economic. So why should a group be excluded on technical grounds when there are perfectly good solutions that would address the entire market? As an EU citizen and taxpayer, I do not believe that this is acceptable.
It is the duty of the EU to provide information in open non-proprietary formats which are readable/viewable by all of its citizens. Open solutions without legal problems are available.
The EU document formats should be cross-platform. EU writes this in dozens of documents. Why you use proprietary, closed and commercial company-related ones? Dont discriminate linux users please! Lisabon 2010 needs these IT professionals very much.
As an EU taxpayer, I believe that it is the duty of the Council to make this service available to all its citizens in a non-discriminatory manner. This either means the service should be in a single, non-proprietary format - or alternatively, simulcast in a number of formats that covers the audience profile. If the BBC news service can manage both MS & Real formats - I don't see what the problem might be - other than simple ignorance?
Rather Linux than EU videos. I have already made my choice.
I can not understand the legal issue with Linux as stated by the EU Council. Where is the problem? actually it is ununderstandable!
The EU document formats should be cross-platform. EU writes this in dozens of documents. Why you use proprietary, closed and commercial company-related ones? Dont discriminate linux users please! Lisabon 2010 needs them very much.
