Doing such things, european union is making computing by the lowest common denominator.
And why is it illegal really ? Just because some people at the EU commission received money from microsoft ? It's sad to see this in Europe.
Unacceptable.
Completely incompatible with the anti-trust legislation to support mac and pc code.
It should be changed immediately, as linux users are the 10%.
IAfter 3 years of legislation for the windows media player, now EU takes steps to discriminate the users with the N version.
Isn't accessibility an obligation in Europe? It should be. Isn't discrimination illegal in Europe? It should be. And what is denying access to anybody who doesn't use the proprietary Windows or MacOS software short of discrimination? What kind of Europe is that which wants its inhabitants to pay a tax to Microsoft? Not the one I want to live in!
Public services should be available to everybody, and the only way to ensure that is to use open standards instead of proprietary technologies. If there really are laws on the books that somehow make that illegal, they should be specified and changed. By the people for the people, anybody?
Standars and norms are what makes the world progress and EU in particular. Please use legal open formats (theora e.g.) and if Linux can not be supported in a legal way, then the law is wrong, change it.
I am appalled that the EU is so apt to believe the propaganda of the corporations. So much, that they would believe that the news reports themselves are dictating Law.
Foremost of the values in the Linux community are keen understanding, knowledge and acquiring truthful information.
It is a pity that the EU does not share these values.
I do not understand why using open codecs is not legal. The EU should be using open document formats for anything that is published for public consumption.
Isn't the European Union supposed to be all about democracy, human rights and freedom? Then why is our freedom being taken away time and time again, and replaced with a mandatory submission to the arbitrary whims and the insecure and unstable products of a (by the European Union!!!) convicted monopolist, rather than that open standards are being used? [1]
What's the point of having such a thing as "standards" if we're all obliged to comply with non-standard software from a single, abusive company?
And well, if we DO have to comply to that kind of policy, then you may as well forget about democracy as well, because a single corporate entity dictating political issues is nothing less than fascism.
Oh, and please don't give us the "But it IS standard because everyone is using it" crap either, as it is ONLY being used by everyone BECAUSE nobody's been given the CHOICE, despite Microsoft's many convictions of monopoly abuse, the many antitrust cases against Microsoft all over the world and not in the least the existence of perfectly valid standard formats for documents and multimedia files (and streams).
[1] Quite reminiscent of George Orwell's "Animal Farm"...: "All animals are equal but some are more equal than others."
"We cannot support Linux in a legal way. So the answer is: No support for Linux"
This is meaningless gibberish used to justify technical incompetence and political failure
It is a real shame.
We pay a lot for computer ingeniers who are incompetents because they dont respect the people they are working for.
We need consideration for ethics people.
Unfortunately, with this kind of behavior, EU is building "french may 29th" events.
So the day microsoft don't want us to see debates he just have to doo a security update of wmp and 99% of people can't see it any more?
well I can see wma stream under linux, but i really dislike to rely on such a bad solution... you should at least let us chice for a different codec...
This is nonsense. You could stream using the open Ogg Vorbis format, or if you insist on a closed solution you could use Real Networks offering. The BBC has no problem streaming to Linux; why is it a problem for you ?
Your position is untenable and incorrect. Think about it: there is nothing illegal about using Linux. It is open source. Close the door and you have closed your minds. That is not the work of a democratic union!
This situation is prejudiced. That feed is the RIGHT (not privilege) of every EU citizen. Even the US government provides documents and services in OS independent platforms. This, I think is a true embarrassment to have a multinational government that is so quick to exclude some of it's own citizens, it stinks of the OLD days.
Pitiful European politicians, unable to free the EU from US standards!
