It was and remains a dream to have a language of peace, a language that is neutral because it has no prime political background and doesn't belong to any one people or country. A language that is, in comparison to other languages, easy to learn.

To achieve this dream has been the aim of many, but after well over a century only one man has come close. The Polish linguist L. L. Zamenhof released his 'International Language' in 1887 in a book entitled 'Unua Libro.'

In this publication, Zamenhof used the pseudonym 'Dr. ESPERANTO' - 'Doctor who hopes.' This is how 'Lingvo Internacia' ('The International Language') became known as 'Esperanto.'

Esperanto is both a neutral and international language - spoken by an estimated 2 million speakers and it is believed that there are over 2,000 native speaks (although no country has adopted the language officially).

In the following quote, I feel, you will see exactly what Zamenhof's hopes were -

"The idea of Esperanto is: the foundation of a neutral language will help break down barriers between people and help everyone see each other as neighbours." [L. Zamenhof, 1912]

The word 'Esperanto' translates as 'hope' or 'hoping one.' Thus, I ask the European Union, to accept and recognise Esperanto as an international language.

This dream deserves to be made a reality. No one is asking to make this language a national one - not in the least - but let it be accepted and recognised. Allow a great dream to come true.

Esperanto is VERY easy to learn compared to other languages. It makes sense for lots of people to learn it, rather than struggle with bad attempts at learning other national languages.
