As I'm sure you all are aware of, Mohonasen High school is under new leadership. Our new principal has numerous new policies in store that are drastically different from the way past administration has been. In short, these new policies have little or no basis for their implementation, take away rights from students, and are generally demeaning. Something very similar occurred while he was principal of the middle school. Before he became principal, the middle school was run differently. Upon his leave, it is now comparable to a prison. Evidence of this can be seen in the policies he implemented.

- -ID cards are now valid. Without it, there are certain things one cannot do/certain places one cannot go in the middle school. This includes going to teen town, going to the gym in your free time, getting some fresh air during lunch, and so forth.

- - "Academic probation" has been implemented. It is similar to paddling; the administration takes it upon itself to discipline students. In this case, however, the student is punished regardless of whether or not he/she breaks any rules. They are forced to stay after school everyday if they are failing a class. The school should encourage students to pass their classes, but disciplining is none of their business, they have no right to do so when no rules are being broken.

- - "The seven habits of highly effective teens" is a huge waste of time and money. Every Monday for fifteen minutes, students are forced to attend an assembly wherein the importance of one of these "habits" is discussed. If one were to ask a student from the middle school what he/she thought of this, the majority would say something to the effect of "It gets me out of class" or "I get a fifteen minute nap”. Notice a pattern here? Each of these policies generally have little need and assume that a small select group of people know what is best for a huge amount of students.

One would not be paranoid to think that he will implement similar policies at the high school. To do such a thing is even worse, considering the fact most high school students are more mature than most from the middle school. Hence, they belittle and are demeaning toward the high school students. Past administrations have recognized the fact that high school students should be given more freedoms than those from the middle school because they are generally at a different level of maturity and thinking. More freedoms are given as students advance to new levels of schooling. In this case, they are being revoked. Here is a list of the known plans our new principal has in store for the high school.

- The end of the right to carry backpacks. For years, students have cherished the right to be able to carry heavy books and binders around in their backpacks. It is convenient because we do not have to bear the weight, and because it reduces locker trips, in turn, it reduces tardiness. Our new principal plans to take that freedom away, slowly, and grade by grade. During a recent study, results showed that the average weight of a backpack used while attending school weighs around 15.7 pounds. Can you imagine having to carry all of that under your arms What if you have back/muscle disorders or problems? You could not use a backpack, but then, you'd have to make multiple locker trips and end up going all over the building. Guess what? You'll be rewarded by obeying this rule by being sent to the office for being late. Taking away this freedom will only cause more problems.

- - "Essential tasks" This one is just like academic probation. Basically, if you are failing a class, you have to stay after school everyday until you've made up all work for the class. Numerous teachers will disapprove of this one. The school will be making sure the students get their work done. This is very childish. At such an age, high school students should be able to make their own decisions when it comes to grades. This definitely won't be preparing students for college, as college professors will not care at all if their students are to lazy/ fail to hand their work in. Policies like this, along with detention, are usually aimed at children. This is why this policy is demeaning. As young adults, the administration needs to be able to respect our right to make our own decisions and let us suffer the repercussions. The majority of the staff operates this way. If you do not do your work, the bad grades you will receive, in a sense, is the punishment. Why should they have to care?

- -The abolishment of pep rallies. Our new principal plans to do away with pep rallies. In this case, the majority is being punished for the supposed wrongdoings of the few. There are alternatives to abolishment. Instead of making troublemakers stand next to Bob or Harry for ten minutes, then letting them return to the stands, how about removing them from the gym immediately? That will suppress the idiots.

- -It is not certain, it is however very possible, that student ID cards will serve a purpose.

All right, let's review, these new policies:

- - Take away freedoms and infringe rights
- - Make the majority subject to a select few
- - Are demeaning, belittling, and very authoritive.

If you were to compare this to a form of government, what is it most similar to? That’s right, totalitarianism. In the middle school, the changes started off small, and eventually, it ended up in the state it is now. It is not unwise to think that the same will be the case with the high school. The High school is not the Middle school. Students are older and more mature. Why then, would they be treated like children? Have we done anything to deserve such treatment? We may not be able to make decisions, but we can comment on them and let the administration know that we do not want such radical authoritive change.

because mcgrath shouldnt have the right to just come in and mess up everyones year. And i mainly support this petition because the juniors an seniors have not yet experienced the BS that mcgrath wants to force us into . and just an extra message to everyone, if this petition doesnt work, we ALL need to work together by getting attention from people in high places like the administration, police or even the media to get the school to end this. if we have to we need to riot and show them we dont want to be told how to work in school and that we wont be told how to either.

If any of these unfounded, idiotic ideas were to make the way into my school, I'm sure their perpitrator would be shot. High School is supposed to be a learning experiance - and that means learning responisbility as well, and how to making your own choices, and drawing your own conclusions. If a student is failing, it should be up to THEM to decided what to to about it, not the staff. Breaking rules is punishible, and that punishment can be a learning experiance. But forcing kids to stay after for failing? The only thing they will learn from that is that they don't have to motivate themselves to get things done. School shouldn't be implemented because people want to get good grades. They're there for people to learn and mature, and become responsible for their own decisions.

Mcgrath is a MORON!!!! man does he even realize that by forcing us to stay after school all he's doing is making it harder for us to learn self discipline!!!!! DOWN WITH McGRATHS STUPID RULES If he would take 20 minutes he would realize that Con Far Outweighs The Pros

I really really hated 7 habits because it was so boring and, yes, a waste of time. Also, I neeeeed to have a backpack because I don't have a chance to go to my locker this year (or a lunch) and I have to have binders to stay organized. I wouldn't be able to carry them and I would be forced to use folders and become unorganized. Also, I don't wanna be in high school and feel like I'm being treated like a 6th grader. I just agree with everything argued for in this petition. Period.

because I have respect for my peers (some of them, that is) and I do not think that they should be treated like babies. I've reaed that Seven Habits book and its full of such asinine crap its enough to make me puke. And abolishing back packs is such a phenominaly stupid idea that it makes me wonder if the administration is actually concerned about the students wellbeing and not whether or not the schools reputation is damaged because one kid managed to smuggle in drugs. The administration would do well to open up a history book and look up a little court case called New Jersey vs. T.L.O.
