The Code of Virginia § 22.1-137 states:

"In every public school there shall be a fire drill at least once every week during the first twenty school days of each school session, and more often if necessary, in order that pupils may be thoroughly practiced in such drills. During the remainder of the school session fire drills shall be held at least monthly."

In Southampton High School in Courtland, Virginia this code is not followed. Without an adequate number of fire drills in the specified times students can not be guaranteed their utmost safety, which is one of the missions of the school system. With students, especially freshman, they do not necessarily know the quickest route out of the building during a potential emergency situation. This problem can be easily rectified by conforming to the Virginia Code. By adding more fire drills into the schools agenda it would make the students feel more at ease knowing that they know how to get out of the building in case of an emergency, and it would also cut down on panic and confusion in the event of an actual emergency.
