Every time I walk into Walmart, there are a ton of Betta fish sitting in cups upside down in murky water. Even pet stores are guilty of this.
Most of the time, when you ask for assistance in a pet store or retail store that distributes fish, many of the workers have no idea about illnesses regarding fish nor do they know about the proper feeding or environment needed for the fish need to thrive.

Stores like Walmart--and even pet stores--need to start taking better care of their fish. I have seen tanks covered with ich infestations (where it looks like there are tiny grains of salt covering the fish) that NEED to be treated. If someone were to buy those fish and bring them home, they would infect all other fish in said person's tank. People need to be hired ESPECIALLY to care for these animals and not just be individuals who are paged from other departments who know nothing about fish.

Betta fish are the most mistreated fish, in my opinion, on the market. They are distributed under the false pretense that they can survive in any small body of water without heat, etc. They are left to rot on the shelves in small cups.

Please encourage stores who distribute fish to take care of these animals better. They have plenty of medication on their shelves for various ailments, however, many of their fish are sick and dying. Why? Because they have no idea how to use it! It doesn't take long to Google proper care for fish and also how to easily identify some of the diseases that fish carry. While on shelves, these animals should be fed properly AND have their habitats cleaned. If they look ill, then they should be treated--or at least have someone make an attempt to treat them.

If the fish dies, REMOVE it from the shelves so customers do not have see it. If the fish looks ill, attempt to treat it. If there is algae in the tanks, clean them. If there is a bacterial infestation in the tanks, treat it!

Having someone work specifically in the fish department, who STAYS in the fish department would probably work wonders.

Fish should be treated humanely, too.
