Quattro membri dei Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) sono stati sequestrati lo scorso sabato, 26 novembre, a Baghdad, Iraq. Non sono spie, non sono al servizio di nessun governo. Sono persone che hanno dedicato la loro vita a lottare contro la guerra e si sono pubblicamente e con determinazione opposti all'invasione e all'occupazione dell'Iraq. Sono persone credenti, ma non sono missisonari. Hanno un pofondo rispetto per la religione mussulmana e per il diritto degli iracheni alla autodeterminazione. I CPT arrivarono in Iraq nell'ottobre del 2002 per opporsi all'invasione e vi sono rimasti fin da allora, in solidarieta' con il popolo iracheno. Il gruppo ha offerto un contributo inestimabile nell'informare il mondo su molti degli orrori a cui sono sottoposti i detenuti iracheni nelle prigioni americane e nei centri di detenzione. I CPT sono stati tra i primi a documentare le torture sui prigionieri della prigione di Abu Ghraib, molto prima che la storia uscisse sui grandi organi d'informazione. I membri del CPT hanno passato ore e ore a intervistare cittadini iracheni per ascoltare le loro testimonianze di abusi e torture, inferti loro da uomini e donne dell'esercito statunitense e hanno diffuso queste informazioni in tutto il mondo. Ognuno dei quattro membri dei CPT sequestrati in Iraq ha dedicato la sua vita a resistere all'oscurità e alle sofferenze della guerra e dell'occupazione. Convinti che non sia sufficiente opporsi alla guerra dalla sicurezza di casa propria, hanno preso la difficile decisione di andare in Iraq, sapendo che il clima di diffidenza ceato dall'occupazione straniera comportava il rischio di venire erroneamente scambiati per spie o missionari.
