I have been in touch with Christian Peacemaker team members in their work among Aboriginals in Canada, and found them to be completely honest, dedicated idealists. I cannot believe the hostages in Iraq are spies, and I plead with their captives not to make them innocent victims of George Bush's lies, errors and the brutalities that have been visited on the Iraqi people deriving from them.

Last year I journeyed to the Middle East to attend a conference sponsored by Sabeel in Jerusalem in an effort to show solidarity and hope for the Christian and Arabic people of the Middle East. Thus I read with sadness the message sent today from Sabeel regarding the hostages now being held in Iraq. Please know that all Americans do not support my nation’s sad misadventures in Iraq and Israel. Therefore accept my sincere wish as well for the release of the captors who have struggled with great courage and dignity to end the despair and misery brought to that region by misguided people and policies.
