We, the undersigned, would like this new Congress to restore funding to Dr. Bussard et. al.'s important research and development of inertial-electrostatic confinement fusion. (IECF)

Robert Bussard was the Assistent Director of the Atomic Energy Commission's Controlled Thermonuclear Reaction Division. He and the director founded the mainline fusion program for the United States.

He has since worked on IECF under the auspices of the Department of Defense. All funding for the DoD's nuclear research and development was cut in order to provide funding for the Iraq war.

This emerging technology can benefit our economy, our environment, and the energy demands of our future, because it offers safe, cheap, and clean energy. Brussard et. al.'s research has already increased the efficiency of IECF systems by several orders of magnitude.

Bussard is proposing to produce two 1/10th scale research prototypes followed by a full-scale prototype which, his team's current research indicates, will be capable of sustained fusion with net energy gain. They need $200 million to do it.

In contrast, the ITER project, an experimental reactor to be used for research into magnetic confinement fusion(MCF), costs about 50 times that: $12 billion. And research into this technology has not resulted in significant efficiency improvement in fusion-based energy.

In conclusion, IECF technology is cheaper, more feasable, and more promising for our future than MCF, and we would like our tax dollars to be invested in it.
