£58k is a small amount of money for a venue which hits so many of NCC targets on youth provision. Come on - own up. Someone's just made a cockup at the council and no one will mind if they change their mind!
THE ROADMENDER IS RELE COOL, ITS FUN FOR EVERYONE OF EVERY TASTE. I GO TO THE KAOS EVERI FORTNIGHT N HAVE A RELE GOOD TIME. IT SHOULD STAY OPEN COS ITS A RELE NEAT PLACE FOR TEENAGERS TO HANG OUT AND HAVE FUN ASWELL AS ADULTS!!!!
its been many a year since i have experienced live music and a long time since i last visited the roadmender.fingers crossed i`ll be there to see the damned.
the council should hang their heads in shame for what they are proposing.
heres hoping that the roadmender rocks on for many a year!!!
There's no where else like it - it adds to out community and it would be an outrage if this outlet for social and cultural experiences for our town's community were to go.

the roadmender is a vital part of the cultural development of northamptonshire, and one of the only venues to offer such a varity of entertainment and activities.
Roadmender has been a big part of my childhood. Socialising with friends at the varius nights there. These days has been the centre piece of all the major events in northampton. Would be a major blow for young people in the town. giving even more of a reason for them to cause trouble on the streets, because there is nothing better to do!!!
My brother and son regularly go to the Roadmeder and I feel it is one of the few places young people can go and see up and comming groups and get together in a safe envioronment that is fun.
The emerging arts are never going to be profitable and therefore represent an unattractive proposition for the beancounters. But value to the community has to be measured in more than £'s shillings and pence. Without the Roadmender how much poorer will the community be culturally. Harry Hill, Al Murray, Mark Thomas, The Black Crowes, The Blockheads, Eddi Reader, Dr Feelgood, Canned Heat, Bjorn Again, Rhona Cameron, are just some of the acts I can remember seeing there. Some were hardly known but all are household names now. The Roadmender might be critcised for serving the interests and wants of minorities but it's the sum of minorities that forms society. Sooner or later the Roadmender will cater for your minority whether that's alternative comedy, new music, world music, performance art, poetry, rock or even jazz. Where in Northampton or the surrounding area will you find a venue that is purpose built and willing to offer such wide ranging and diverse entertainment. The Derngate? The Royal? The whole point of paying our taxes to government local or national is that it then provides facilities that ordinarily the individual would choose not to pay for. For example who would choose to pay for street lighting voluntarily, very few but we quite like the fact that we have street lights. That is the responsibility of government to provide facilities for the greater good of the communnity. Do they get it? I'm a local taxpayer and I wonder what I get for my money. A very nicely lit sculpture on the corner of Cliftonville Road and Bedford Road just outside the Council offices. I like it but how much? The world record for Pelican crossings in a half mile on the Wellingborough Road which many pedestrians don't use anyway. There is waste in local government, two examples just given. Here's a money saving idea, let's cut some six figure executive salaries on the council.
I lived in Northampton for 4 years & the Roadmender was one of the best things about the town. had some fabulous nights there - in particular the Megadogs!!! travelled down from Yorkshire this year to see the Levellers play & was relaly pleased to see it was still a great place
I can not belive that it has come to this, closing the roadmender would be deverstating for northampton. Not only is it a great place to showcase up and coming artists it is also an excellent place to hold regular club nights . so come on and lets save the roadmender
I spent my teenage years there and they were definitely happier for it. Close the Roadmender and Northampton loses one of the key places for young people to be a part of something which will inspire them before, during and after each visit - something which keeps them off the streets at night in a safe, creative environment. Close the Roadmender and you stifle the music scene in the town and the life of anyone who might want to play even a small part in it. Plus Northampton loses a lot of prestige in the eyes of potential residents - any young student with an interest in new music would surely choose to study in a place which had at least one venue capable of staging gigs by decent sized new bands. My parents still talk about watching the Beatles at the ABC in Northampton, whereas I hark on about Oasis playing the RM on the 8th May 1994. Lose this facility at your peril.
I regularly attend the Roadmender. It ios a great resource for alternative live music. It's recent line up has been particularly good and it would be a trgaedyb to lose it just as it getting consistently good acts in. Recent gigs have beenwell attended too.
I moved to Northampton 3 years now I been in music industry all my life, performing world wide, I also performed at Roadmender ones and I love the place I was shocked to hear this decision, art and music makes our society better and Healthy community makes our world better place. Music gives all the elements that are required to create sense of community.
I pray and wish that this won’t happen. God Bless Roadmender
I am 50 years old and not been to the Roadmender for many years but I am aware of the important role it still plays in the lives of many of our deteriating Towns youngsters.Where will they all go when Roadmender has gone?If the council must save £58000 they should cut it by a third each year over the next 3 years giving the current management who it appears are gradually turning the fortunes of the centre around, a fair chance to make it more financially viable.
If you kill the Roadmender, you leave no place for any international artists to perform.
Making this town become more chav/hick-redneck than before.
Go on...let it disappear and degrade our town more....not.
i have had some wicked nights out at the roadmender. lots of my friends from out of town have trekked over to northampton when there were good events on.
how can you have big events like bbc radio1 and dizee rascal there recently and then suddenly threaten to cut the funding. weird. other places in the midlands have loads of venues like the roadmender which all get funding and are sucessful. how come northampton only gets one decent venue which is now under threat. no wonder so many artistic people are moving away from northapton. soon there will be nothing in northampton execpt clubs like time and envy. god help us.
I love Roadmender and it is a great place for up coming bands to get out and gig there also it is the only place that is big enough for big bands to come to Northampton
the roadmender must not lose its funding. you must simply get better promoters in to put on more interesting clubnights, events and exhibitions to make the most of a wicked venue.
if the roadmender goes northampton will have NOTHING interesting to do for young people. first RADLANDS CLOSED then SPINADISC CLOSED and now look, the roadmender might close. what will be left?
The Roadmender has so much to offer. I've seen big National groups and small local groups. I've seen theatre, art exhibitions and comedy there.
The venue just gets better and better.
Give it a chance. Please help this great place give other people so many excellent nights out.
I read in the paper about Northamptons cultural mile. This is Northamptons culture! The Roadmender is so important to our town.
Please put some money in to something that matters.
From the first week i arrived in Npton till the last week before I left, this was the greatest venue to experience fresh new original music, made possible by getting people together and giving them responsibility and purpose.
shut the RM? why? so people will go and get pissed up at some **** hole down bridge street and fight? that to me is all the council want. what does this town wanna be known for? a fine historical venue that has supported many of the worlds finest musical acts or as a host to a load of fat bald headed twats in topman shirts fighting. Think- how much does it cost to pay for the countless police that wonder twn on a fri and sat PM? Then how much to pay for the RM? who gives a toss who goes their kids, greeboes old people, at least they are together as one. aint that what the Baggy Manchester days taught us.?
i have been coming to the roadmender since 1979, and it would be a shame to loose this venue,it offers so much for the young. the county council waste money on .eg. the carpark which closes at 8pm and is lite up wasting electricity,it would be usefull if it was open till later for people to use during the roadmender concerts, also the council have wasted £80.000 pounds on youth offending team (yot), when the young offenders dont turn up for community service, money has to be paid out to staff, that's a waste of money. the roadmender has so much to offer, and is a great venue, it should be supported.
In a town the size of Northampton that is very wealthy relatively, it is scandalous that the Council is proposing to cut arts funding in this way.
The Roadmender is an asset to the town and provides all sections of the community with a valuable resource that is not just dedicated to making money, but to providing a bit of much needed diversity.
visited the roadmender for the first time last month to see The Fall. One of the best venues I've been to for sound quality - would be tragic to see it go.
i come to your venue to see comedy, music, and theatre ive been most months this year and want to carry on. why dont you advertise better more people may come. im often disappointed by the amout of people to see such good shows that are put on. what are you doing wrong i,ll try to be at the meeting if you close it will be such a bad move for the town. young and old appreciate it
The ellie oldershaw rant.
Can you see the type of people Northampton breeds? Take the RM away and the town will be over flowing with mental people who have no interestes other than going in to town at the weekend to fight. The ellie oldershaw rant comes from a 'person' who is angry with themselves because they have a crap life and no interests. They hate the fact that people go to the RM to have a good time, be with like minded people and to get inspired to do something with their lives.
People who go to the RM appreciate it and take something from it. Don't close the RM. Northampton needs positive, exciting and cultured people (young and old). Don't let idiots like the ellie oldershaw rant become the face of Northampton.
I have had many, amny great nights at the RM. From Carwash to Maggie Thatcher club nights, to seeing live gigs such as Radiohead, Menswear, Reef, The Magic Numbers, The Bees and various world music acts. i have met many people and made many friends through the RM and it is very sad that both the Arts Council and local Councillors do not support the cultural diversity this venue appeals to.
Okay so this ent ellie but who gives two ****s. rm should be shut down effective IMEDIATLY. it's a ****ing skank whole where 12 year old little slags and greebos go on friday nights thinking there hard and gettin drunk.
WHATS THE POINT. do something ****ing constructive with your time. LIKE NOBBY...terrorising newbies?! your like ****ing 17 or some ****, GO GET A JOB. and all you "newbies" FUCK OFF. no one wants you here and no one likes you. just because you dress like a **** NO ONE CARES.
everyone that goes roadmender...i hope you lose and arm and die.
If the council lets another chunk of the music and arts scene slip into the gutter then they deserve to have the impossible job of re-injecting some soul into this lifeless town.
The Roadmender has been a cultural oasis for as long as i have been into live music. We need this! Please don't let it die!
