As a concerned citizen of the state of Georgia, I feel compelled to express my shock and disbelief on reading that the Georgia Legislature and the Georgia Board of Education are approving two classes teaching the Bible in public schools.
First, this is an obvious ploy for politicians to garner votes from religious fundamentalists at the expense of the children of the state of Georgia.
Second, the position that the legislation is not inspired by ulterior motives of promoting a particular religious tradition over all others is effectively indefensible. Thus, the proposed courses will assuredly be challenged and defeated on the grounds that they violate the separation of church and state, and consequently the entire endeavor is a grossly negligent waste of state resources and taxpayer money.
Third, there are in fact no benefits that the proposed courses would offer. According to the authors of the legislation, the proposed course material is of marginal and indirect historical relevance. Further, there are already perfectly legal and appropriate institutions in place throughout the state of Georgia (Church Sunday Schools) that already fulfill the proposed aim of the courses, making the courses extraneous and redundant.
Fourth, the negative media attention will undoubtedly damage Georgia’s national image, with far-reaching repercussions ranging from loss of tourism revenue to protracted difficulty in attracting skilled residents from other parts of the country. This announcement may in fact induce many current Georgia residents to reconsider whether they really wish to raise their children in a bubble of increasing intolerance when intolerance seems to be decreasing in much of the rest of the country.
Some native and proud Georgians may in fact take their family, skills, education, and businesses to other parts of the country where the priorities of the state curriculum are more focused on preparing children for the future and less on making taxpayer-funded endorsements of popular religious groups.
For the benefit of our children and our great state, I implore you to support the withdrawal of these proposed courses. The needs of our children for the best possible education far outweigh the needs of a particular religious group for state funds, sponsorship, or endorsement.

Sincerely,

To teach the Bible in our public schools is to compromise both institutions; church congregations may dwindle as students get their learning elsewhere, and schools are compromised as one religious tradition is singled out as being worthy of further study. I do appreciate the state's willingness to integrate the curriculum with classes that discuss faith and values, as these matters are at the core of what drives society. I would encourage a comparative studies class on religion and belief. God bless and good luck
