what did pitbulls ever do to Georgia State Representatives Williams? I thought this was a free country, guess not since im being told what dogs i can own!!!
I'm not surprised that Earnest Williams and Tyrone Brooks are behind this...it's indicative of their uninformed lifestyles. And sadly, more and more of our freedoms continue to erode as we allow personal responsibility to be legislated away. Ban the dog, sue gun makers, sue big tobacco, sue krispy kreme. I can't wait for the Georgia legislature to assign me a "life-partner" and chose the sex of my children.
Either way, my little vicious killer pit will continue to sleep at the foot of my bed and play with my little nephew and do silly tricks for milkbones regardless of the lunatic aura shining from Williams and Brooks.
Where have all the adults gone?
I own one of the sweetest dogs on the planet, and he also happens to be a pit. There is no evidence that pits are genetically predisposed to violence and if trained and socialized properly (as with ANY other breed) they make loving, loyal and friendly pets. Banning the breed will not only be doing an injustice to a wonderful breed and all of the owners out there who take the time to lovingly raise and train their pets, but it will also result in the immediate destruction of thousands of pits and pit mixes in shelters throughout the sate who have done NOTHING to deserve such a fate and will be denied the chance to find homes. It is ignorant and will not decrease instances of people keeping fighting dogs (a prime instance where violence is incouraged throughout the dog's life)because owning an animal for that purpose is already illegal. Such a wide sweeping ban is thoughtless. Cases of violence in dogs should be handled on a case by case basis and dogs who have no history of violence should not be relegated to muzzling in public (including trips to the vet when they aer sick) because of another dog/owner's actions.
The whole breed can't be condemned.Penalize the owners for irresponsible behavior. They are powerful dogs. They are incredible sweet and intelligent.Sure my dog is a tyrant, with me.He is spoiled rotten.Love them!
This bill is naive and illustrates the tendency of our government to overreact to sensationalistic news and furthermore to overreact without performing the due diligence of educating oneself on the issue. Anyone who took the time to read a scientific resource on the issue rather than just the newspaper would quickly learn that the breed is not the problem here. Ever notice that when other breeds attack people it's just not considered newsworthy? Any legislator who votes for this bill without first becoming truly educated on the facts of pit bulls should be ashamed. Educate yourself- don't blindly go along with what you hear in the media!
By outlawing pit bulls you make them even more valuable to the human element that is the cause of the problem. We have not successfully enforces our laws against dog fighting but have only made it more enticing to the same criminals who use the dog fight as an excellent venue for drug sales protected by the impropperly trained dogs. We need to fix the problem not ban the victim!
My husband and I (along with our 3 small children) have two pit bulls. They are the best behaved, well mannered and loyal dogs that we have evey known. They aren't just pets, they are our 4 legged furry children. Pit Bulls like any other breed are a product of there environment. Don't punish the entire breed because of a few idiotowners who raise there dogs to be vicious.
I am against this bill. It is the human factor that does not raise the dog properly. We have 3 pit bulls, a rottweiler and a (5lb) yorkshire terrier. Guess who rules the roost, the yorkie! Our pits are big babies, they love children and people. It is the way the dog's owners raise them, not the breed.
German Sherman Shepherds and other breeds are ruthless in pursuit of criminals. Any breed can be trained a certain way. The Staffordshires that I know are intelligent, sweet and loving...but then again, so are their owners.
Once again, politicians have bowed to media-produced public pressure and hysteria. As all responsible dog owners know, it's not the dog but the owner who should be held accountable.
i recently bought a purebred pit bull and he is the biggest baby and lovable dog. Pit Bulls only have a bad name because of bad owners who abuse them. If a pit bulls were raised properly then you would never hear of them being a problem. I for one am totally against this bill and i will be contacting my representative about this.
there is no such thing as a breed of dog that is vicious. If these dogs are raised properly, they can be the most respectful breed out there. mans best friend. worry about our education policies or start holding people accountable. These dogs are not to blame.
People need to understand that the breed is owned by more than red necks and vicious people.
I remember when rottwiellers were getting the same bad reputation. I rescued a Staffie about 2 years ago and consider him a loving part of my family. I can tell you the only problem with my dog is he is a lap dog and is spoiled rotten.
I believe it all comes down to how the dog is raised as to what kind of an animal it becomes. The problem is the stereo type owner who doesn't care about the dog (or anything else) and breeds for himself and his ego only. When you see the damage strong dogs like Pit Bills can do to humans and property, it's not the dogs that should pay it's the owners.
To me the legislation should make it a felony if you own a vicious dog who causes harm to person or property much like the owner of a gun is responsible. I raised my dog like he was my son and my biggest fear would be someone being licked to death (and I haven't heard of this yet).
IT'S NOT THE DOGS THAT ARE VICIOUS, IT'S THE IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS THAT SHOULD BE BANNED. I HAVE TWO PITS, AND WOULD NOT TRADE THEM FOR ANYTHING. THEY ARE SO SWEET AND GENTLE AND ARE SO GOOD WITH CHILDREN. TO REITERATE, IT'S THE VIOLENT AND HATEFUL OWNERS THAT ARE THE PROBLEM--BAN THEM.
This is the most ridiculous and ludacris bill i've ever heard of. The way a pitbull acts directly pertains to the way it was trained and raised by its owner/s. I have a pit/lab mix and he is the most caring/loving/innocent puppy i've ever seen. Take care in your training and you'll have a great companion for life; treat the dog like a floor mat/beat him and you'll have a vicious killer, much like any dog raised this way. Don't take away our rights to own a pet based on a minute number of attacks. There is no positive correlation to vicious dogs and the pit bull breed. Open your minds, discover the true essence of why there are dangerous animals--THE OWNERS!!! Long live the breed, my puppy Jose(ruffer).
Humans are way more likely to committ random and senseless acts of unprovoked violence and destruction than any one particular breed of canine. Only a human can teach another creature to hate for no reason...where's the bill to ban humans? That's equally as irresponsible and mindlessly stereotypically American as banning a breed of dog, a make of car, a calibre of gun or a type of plant. None of which addresses the heart of the problems, which are caused by the misuse and abuse of commodities, organisms, and ideas by the most dangerous of all legal weapons, an uneducated and needlessly fearful American with a false sense of entitlement. Leave the pit bull alone and introduce a bill to muzzle and leash these errant and misguided humans.
I own a pit-pointer mix. She is the sweetest dog I've ever had. These ignorant policy makers need serious education on this matter. Don't they have more to do with their time and the tax payers' dollars? This is outrageous.
This is not fair to the dogs. Punish those who do wrong, not the many that are doing right. Just like politicians. What they need to work on, they don't.
I love dogs. I hope this bill does not pass. What they should do instead is go after criminals. It is ridiculous, I wish they had the same zeal for protecting our borders
Baning Pitbulls is absurd! The way you raise and treat your animal is how the animal turns out, no matter what breed the dog is. I have a Pit. (Samson) He is the most LOVING dog ever!! He would do nothing but give you doggy kisses!! I believe that if your dog attacks another dog, YOU should be punished not the breed. I think this bill is discrimination!!!! House Bill 78 MUST BE BANNDED TODAY!!!
Cigarettes, SUV's and red meat cause health problems, not dogs. Pitbulls are only violent when they are not bred or cared for properly. Get your priorities in order and take some responsibility and leave the dogs alone
Writting from Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. My thoughts: you band one breed, other breeds will be band - people train their pets. pets don't come in this world asking to be mistreated.
This is not right, and it will display ingnorance to the rest of the country and world if we blame dogs for doing what they have been trained(and beaten) into doing. This is the same ignorance that says people only committ violent crime b/c they saw it on a tv show. I have owned a pit bull mix for nearly 15 years and she is the most loyal and sweetest dog anyone could ask for. Don't blame an innocent animal for a guilty persons actions.
There should be severe laws and regulations against breeders, but not this severe. It's foolish to put such strenuous regulations on this, i mean, if they're raised to kill is one thing, but many pits are HOUSEHOLD PETS, not harmful at all, and this would put absurd regulations on peaceful animals.
This is fueled by ignorance. Maybe we should put down all violent human based on their potential to offend, not actual offenses. It uses the same logic as this bill!
If this shitty bill is passed, you might as well throw on the cuffs and take me to jail because I'll be damned if I treat my pit like that. And hell yea, I will continue to breed my pit. If this bill passes, then I propose a bill to put a muzzle on Rep Williams' dick. Just like my pit doesn't use her mouth to bite people, Rep Williams doesn't use his rusty ass dick to fuck people.
I have 2 pits and they are the best dogs I have ever had. I will never own another breed of dog. Lets punish the owners of pits that mistreat, underfeed and train to fight, not the pit bulls.
For the lack of a better term, this bill is simply ridiculous. How in the world did this nearsighted joker in office? I might have to start voting republican!!
Note the statistics. One third (1/3) of human dog bite-related deaths involved pit bulls. WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER 2/3s ? WHY NOT BAN THOSE DOGS AS WELL?
And the lesson to be learned is - IT'S NOT THE BREED, IT'S THE NEGLIGENCE OF THE OWNERS!!!
Now run off and make up some laws that will really save people's lives... like requiring companies to let their employees telecommute so there will be fewer accident-related deaths!!!
You can believe that I'll remember the name Earnest Williams so I won't make the mistake of voting for him.
Other more appropriate laws already exist and could easily be crafted to combat the problems this law seeks to address. This law is overly broad, igonrant, and restricts the freedom of individuals that this stte and country value. It was originated from a sad personal story from a Georgia State Representative and reflects a lack of knowledge about the American Pit Bull Terrier as a breed.
This is crazy. I couldn't even tell you if my dog is full pit but b/c he looks like a pit he'd have to wear a muzzle. Brilliant idea while we're at it any cars that look fast should stay in the garage.
I am a pit bull owner and I’m very upset with this bill. Banishing this breed is not solving anything, plus it is taking away from our rights. I think as an American I have the right to choose what breed of dog I want as pet. Punish the deed, not the breed!
I love my Pit, and will fight to keep his breed alive and well. Let's do something about the human element in violent training and abuse of these fine animals before we decide that it's our "right" to ban these loyal and loving creatures.
Breed specific legislation needs to be stopped now before it is too late. This bill is absolutely absurd... Punnishing a breed of animal instead of the owner makes no logical sense. Harsher punnishments should be put in place to take any animal from those who violate the law or mistreat their animals. I have 2 loving pits one was a rescue that would never hurt a living soul (except with a barrage of kisses). Thank you for putting this site together and please contact your local legislator to stop this bill from becoming law.
Did you know?
*The Pit Bull was used to represent the US in WW1 and a pit named "Stubby" became a highly decorated WW1 hero.
*President Theodore Roosevelt and Helen Keller both owned Pits.
*Popular companies like RCA and the Buster Brown Shoe Company used the breed as their mascots.
*A Pit Bull named Petie starred in the popular children's television series, Our Gang (The little Rascles); *Pit Bulls accompanied pioneer familes on their explorations for protection, hearding, and hunting.
*Laura Ingalls Wilder of the popular Little House books owned a working Pit Bulldog named Jack.
*And until the late 80's the Pit Bull was reguarded as America's sweetheart breed, admired, respected and loved.
What happened? We honor men and women who fight for this country or perform extraordinary selfless acts for others.. And yet legislation is being passed to kill off a loyal, loving friend who help our forefathers to build and protect this land?
WHY?
If the legislature wants to make a difference they should be aggressively cracking down on the Georgia dog fighting rings and leave the companion animals alone.
My dog was attacked by a pit bull while we walked him on leash. That being said I think this proposed legislation is assine. The individual owners and their dogs should should pay for their actions, not an entire breed. We need rational legislation not extremist knee jerk political grandstanding.
I have a pit bull, 5 other dogs, cats and children. The Pit Bull, Tyson, gets along with everybody, even all the other animals. They need to keep Pit bulls out of the wrong hands. Humans are the ones that make the dogs mean and vicious.
I am moving from Virginia to Georgia with my sweet pit bull puppy. She is well socialized to animals and people, and would never hurt either one. It is unthinkable that a law be passed to punish her and her breed for absolutely no reason. I will not move to Georgia if my dog will be punished as a result.
