I think this is ridiculous....talk about govermental control. The problems with animals are not normally due to their nature so much is hwo they are nurtured. But I feel that it is an invasion of our rights if we allow the government to start dictating laws based on a certain "breed" of dog. What breed of Human are you? Would you want to have more stringent laws because of your race? I believe Hitler tried this....

This is not the dog's fault. Pit's are great animals as long as they are trained correctly. My husband and I owned one for many years. She was the kindest, sweetest dog we ever had. Unfortunately she died a few years ago of old age.

Why don't they ban every breed of dog there is. It is the owner of these vicious animals who are not keeping them under control that need to be addressed, not the breed of the dog.

Only bad pitbulls are those owned by bad people. Responsible owners like me and many others deserve to breed , raise and enjoy these dogs fully in Georgia and any other state. Target the people who raise the dogs wrong. THIS IS A POLITICAL MOVE FOR POLITICAL INTEREST.

I think this law is gonna really piss alot of eople off. I think that you should realize that it's not the dog thats the propblem, it's the owners. I have friends that have two pitt bulls and they wouldnt harm a rat, well because she is a good owner. SO please think before you tick alot of people off.

These pit bulls are not responsible for their actions if they are taught to be aggressive. The owners should be held responsible. Just like a 3 year old child being let outside they need to be watched.

Tony Jenkins said 02/24/05, 1:47 pm (verified)
What's next? Do we muzzle poor black men? Poor white men? There is plenty of data that shows a larger portion of crime is committed by both of these groups, but that has nothing to do with their race or gender. It has to do with how they were raised and their environment. A pit bull who is abused and neglected is more likely to act poorly. It just so happens that pit bulls are a favorite breed of not only true dog lovers, but questionable people who have them around as a sick status symbol.

#1372

Kristina Dunbar said 02/24/05, 7:49 am (verified)
Profiling a breed of an domestic animal is like profiling a human, its wrong. Dogs are supposedly mans best friend and you this bill is making it out to be mans enemy. There are just as many attacks by dobermins, akitas, chows and dalmations even. The focus is on the wrong breed. Pits account for 1.8 percent of bites. think about that..

He is most loving tward children and elderly.. how can you punish the breed for the few owners that dont raise their dogs correctly. Find and punish the owners of them, not my dog. The answer is to crack down on those who are misusing or abusing a thing (a gun, a dog, a drug, etc...) such that he or she is a danger to others. That is the governments job, to protect me, joe citizen, from danger. However, that protection should not come at the cost of my freedom to own a thing (a gun, a dog, a drug, etc...) and use it responsibly and as one who does not put others at risk. We cannot allow the government to encroach upon our freedom any further than they already have. Furthermore, you politicians (all of you) are wasting our resources when there are REAL CRIMINALS AND THREATS TO OUR SOCIETY from which we SHOULD be protected.

A pit bull is not dangerous. A dog which is trained to be aggressive and attack others is. There is a massive difference. A pit bull is possibly the most devoted, loving animal I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. To place a ban on a breed of dog is not only a violation of rights, but a shoddy and irresponsible act that will solve absolutely nothing. Statistically, of the breeds of dog most likely to cause harm to a human, a pit bull is impressively low on the list. The number of dog bites will not decrease in any way, as those dogs which bite or attack others were trained to do so and will continue to be trained, unless those responsible are punished for their actions.

It is the shotty owner of ANY animal that makes them dagerous not the animal/breed itself! Scared people get pit bulls for protection, based on ignorance and the media. "They" don't take care of them...just because you feed and water an animal does not make you a good person or "parent" to the animal. The animal is then brought up wrong and unloved and thus disliking everything, even thier owner!People need to educate themselves about ANY animal, be willing to take on the responsibilty and do right by the animal before they purchase!!!!!

Maybe we can start prohibition once more because of people thaat are injured or killed from drunk drivers. I could go on and on making excuses on why people should be held accountable for their pets behaviour. Any pet, not just Pit Bulls. Maybe we should ban lawmakers that want to waste our time with everything from flags to theory stickers to breed specific proposals...

I have three American pit bulls. The girls are all "lovers"--that's the way they've been raised. As with people, if you raise them to be mean, they probably will be. Punish irresponsible and cruel people who break the law with regard to any pet. Don't legislate against my rights as a responsible pet owner to breed and own any breed of dog I choose. House Bill 78 is part of a "slipery slope" to increased government infringement on our freedom as American citizens.

Not only will this prevent Georgians from owning this wonderful and intelligent breed, it will also condemn thousands of "pit bulls" to death. As a former adoption volunteer, I can guarentee that such a law would require all "pit bulls" obtained by animal shelters to be euthanized regaurdless of their temperment. This law blatantly disregaurds the human error that is involved in nearly all incidents involving "pit bulls."
