I truely believe it is not the dog that is at fault, but in fact, we the public for not holding the owner liable for their dogs actions. With basic obediance and socialization training, a pit bull is no more dangerous that serveral other dog breeds. Let's pass something that makes it more than a slap on the wrist to abuse, neglect and mis-use any dog, cat or animal!
Thanks to all the irresponsible ptibull owners(drug dealers, dog fighters) for compromising the best breed known to man. Is this not discrimination at its finest?
there are more Yorkie and cocker spaniel attacks reported yearly than pit bulls which essentally are several breeds:
American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bull dog, Bull Terrier, and any mix of those. A higher percentage of pits than Labs passed the temperment testing.
My husband and I are the owners of a Pit Bull that we adopted 8 years ago. She is the most affectionate dog that we have ever owned. Please do not punish the people who really truly love this breed. Punish the idiots out there who raise these dogs to be agressive and dangerous. Not all Pitbulls are mean.
A dogs behavior are a reflection of the owners and not the animal. To punish all pitbull type breeds because of it is a disgrace. Not to mention what if the dog is truly for protection such as a jogging woman. This is a clearly a case of "using the wrong tool for the job"
I own a 7 year old Pitt named cream and she is the most loving dog. Growing up with Chihuahuas they bit or nipped I should say more men visitors in my parents home. My Pit would never nip, bite or look and a visitor in my home in a mean way. She loves small kids, teens, people of all ages. She loves to play with her toys and run arould with friend dogs.
Thank you for what you are doing. Cream and I greatly appriciate this!!!
I don't know why people are so much against Pit Bulls, and also Rotwielers. Pit Bulls are sweet and loyal just like any other dog, it's just the owner that raises it. These dogs shouldn't be banned from Ga. I know two very kind and loving Pit Bulls. There was a stray one that ran up to our house and it never barked at all and really liked us. My cousin's friend has a Pit Bull named Oz. He is really sweet and she also has a really small dog, and Oz is really friendly to her and everyone else. There are just to many sterotypes!
I personally do not own a pit bull, but I am the proud owner of a Boxer. How long will it take until they are made illegal in this state? They are not far from the bias felt against pit bulls, just because of how they look. But their appereances are quite decieving. The same prejudice felt against pit bulls and other dogs displaying the same qualities and features. The temperment of ANY dog is entirely up to the upbringing and training of the dog, and that is entirely up to the owner.
This bill will only affect the owners that registered and licensed their pet in the state of Georgia. These owners that took the time to register their pet is a sign that they are loving and caring parents of their dog and understand the responsibilities they are taking. One of my best friends dogs are both pit bulls, and play with my dog in a group surrouinding all the time. They have never displayed any aggression or anger towards another dog or a human ever.
How about imposing stricter penalties on those who fight & abuse Pits?I have a half breed & she is the most loving animal ever.My Jack Russell is more aggressive.
I am an owner of A Staffordshire Bull Terrier and I am disgusted by this bill. I have emailed all of the bill's sponsors as well as the ajc. This bill is well-intended but is fraught with problems and a lazy effort on the part of the authors.
i own two pit bulls and they are the nicest and most well behaved dogs. It is the dumb owners that don't have any RESPONCIABILTY that give these loving dogs a bad name. It also seems like a violation of right to limit what kind of dog you can own!!
This bill is unfounded, legislators shouldn't go against the dogs but rather the irresponsible people abusing/fighting this breed. Cruel humans put pitbulls through horrific abuse, yet this sweet-by-nature dog will often still show love towards humans. Harsher penalties for dog fighters and animal abusers in general are the solution to the problem--not trying to eradicate a breed. Please take a closer look at the whole picture and address the problem where it lies--animal abusers.
Thank you.
As many others have already stated, this is ridiculous. Dog's personalities are greatly shaped by the way they are brought up and treated. We can't stereotype dog breeds any more than we can stereotype people. I have a Staffordshire terrier mix and he is on of the sweetest most friendly dogs you will ever meet.
My pit bull died at 14 years, the greatest friend i ever had. Stalwart, big hearted, an incredible watchdog, and fun loving. dogs reflect the makeup of their owners, how can it be otherwise. if the human is stupid, lazy, or violent, then prosecute and muzzle them, not the breed itself. This is true for any breed.
Personaly I am not a Pit Bull fan, however I think the owners should be held responsible for the animals actions. I don't feel that banning these animals is the correct solutions. What about Rotweillers, German Sheppards, Labs, Dobies, etc . . . there are a lot og dog breeds that have been known to mame and kill children and owners. However if you do research you will find most of these animals are originally hearding dogs NOT gaurd or attack dogs. People and inbreeding are mostly esponsible for the way these animals turn out. Remember A FULL bread dog can be inbread several times, so if you do go to buy a full bread dog or cat for that matter pay very close attention to its breading papers, and if you can look at the parents and how they act.
This bill is no different than “racial profiling”. It is not right to single out a specific breed. Pit Bulls are the most maligned breed of dogs only because of their name. The only reason news outlets report on these attacks is because of sensationalism. It not quite the same to hear that little Suzy was attacked by the family Cocker Spaniel. Furthermore these dogs actions are mandated by there owners, they are only acting the way they are trained. I say prosecute the people who make this breed as it conceived, because for the few “bad” Pit Bulls we hear of there are many more that are beloved family pets. Ban the dangerous owners, because the dog becomes the victim.
How incredibly ignorant this proposal is! I thought discrimination was against the law! I suggest they go after the people who abuse these dogs, and not the animals. We own a previously abused pit bull and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier - the pit bull is extremely submissive, and the Staffy is the sweetest animal who will become a pet therapy dog. You are barking up the wrong tree!
Like with any other pet, it is the owner who should be held accountable. This ban is essentially calling for the forced extinction of a breed of animal. I wonder how the AKC feels about this?
I have owned a pit bull for the past 6 years and she has worked by my side with children and all sorts of animals for those six years and the most "dangerous" part about her is her tail that wags so hard sometimes it leaves a mark.
Owner of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and without a doubt the most loving animal I have ever owned. The writers of the proposed bill have not done their homework.
While well-intended, this fear-based legislation wastes time and money at the expense of positive, pro-active legislation. Everything around us is potentially dangerous; responsible behavior is the key to safety. It was irresponsible human behavior that created the dangerous pet. Rather than ban specific breeds, require that the owner of the animal that attacked another animal or person be fined and evaluated for psychological counseling. Following evaluation, require that the dog's owner take classes in responsible pet ownership or undergo psychotherapy if deemed necessary. In addition, the pet should be removed from the abusive/neglectful situation and treated (a.k.a. rehabilitated) for the physical and psychological wounds inflicted by the irresponsible owner. Once rehabilitated, the pet could be adopted by someone qualified to handle a formerly abused and dangerous dog. The dog should not be sent to doggie death row unless his/her owner goes to death row too. Banning breeds won't solve the real problem. Proactive, positive legislation that encourages education and respect for all life can help the pet, the pet owner, and society.
I own two pitbulls and they are the best dogs ever. Banning a breed is pure ignorance, because it won't stop the issues we already have. People who don't care about their dogs will just find another breed to abuse. You should be trying to HELP this breed, not banish it.
The irresponible people who contribute to the bad reputation of the pit bull will simply ABANDON their pits and move on to ANOTHER BREED to physically, emotionally, and socially DESTROY. This bill is completely USELESS.
I've had a pitbull all my life growing up. Im 23 and I now have 4. The breed is getting a bad name because of the people that own them we should ban those people only a democrat could come up with such a stupid law! get your head out of your ass!
SOUNDS LIKE THE REP> WILLIAMS HAS A PERSONAL VENDETTA AGAINST PITBULLS SINCE HE CLAIMED HIS FRIEND HAD AN INCIDENT IN HIS FAMILY. DEFINATELY A PREJUDICE MOVE AGAINST A LOVING AND KIND ANIMAL BECAUSE OF A WORTHLESS, SLACKING OWNER AND THIER INABILITY TO MAINTAIN PROPER CONTROL OF THEIR DOG. PITBULLS ARE VERY LOYAL.
Please reconsider this ban on the specific breed of dogs, especially killing every Pit in a shelter, because we all know it is the owners, not the dogs themselves, that make thier dogs dangerous. This kind of blanket generalizations and ban will have to be applied to all kinds of things that endanger children (IE Automobiles, Advertising, TV and excessive sugar diets) which kill far more children each year than Pits.
The US isn't allowed to stereotype people by their race, so why should it be allowed to ban a breed of dogs simply due to their breed. There are always a few bad people in the world who make something bad out of a good thing. These are overall good animals when breed by the right people with the right intention.
Don't waste taxpayers money on banning freedoms of responsible pet owners and their pets. If you must legislate, focus on harsher penalties for people who are cruel to animals and cause them to be aggressive.
This proposed bill does not address the real issue. If they are concerned, then they need to legislate against owners that abuse their pit bulls. And since when has GA State Reps been given the power of God to determine which animals should live and which ones shouldn.t.
I always thought pit bulls were bad dogs until I owned one. They are only mean if you raise them that way. I own 2 pits and they are the nicest dogs. We don't have any kids that live in the house, but they are excellent when friends come over with kids.
My sister and her husband have a 2 year old pit bull that has never shown any sign of agression, since she has never been taught to do so. The irresponsible owners are the issue, not the creatures themselves.
The owners who train their dogs to be aggressive fighters and who abuse the dogs are the problem. I have good friends that own a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the dog is incredibly loving and gentle. I have known the dog for years and have taken care of her quite a bit and she does not have an aggressive bone in her body. Punish the bad owners.
I am the owner of a very sweet and gentle natured Staffordshire Bull Terrior. Instead of outlawing this or any other breed of dogs, why not outlaw guns, cars, and other weapons since those things cause more deaths and injuries than any one breed of animal. While you're at it, why not just outlaw people (including kids) since they are the ones that actually use these weapons!!!!
The first dog to be certified to work in GA nursing homes was a pit bull. The first GA dog frisbee champion was a pit bull. Bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, etc. are a proud Georgian and American breed. This bill is thoughtless and baseless. Why not create a bill that educates humans about responsible pet ownership? Please vote to remove these turkeys from elected office. Who knows what other bills they are wasting time creating. All these politicians are doing are perpetuating the cruel and unwarranted stereotype that casts the Pit Bull breed into a negative role.
I was attacked by a trained attack Rott Reiler a few years ago and put in the hospital for 3 days, are you going to outlaw all dogs? Were are you going to stop? I think you need to outlaw the crazy people that train all kinds of dogs to attack and kill.
I have 2 dogs that are a mixed pit bull breed, they are loving and fun dogs whom myself and my two young children love. Make the owner's of the dogs that train them to attack and kill resonsible for the dogs actions, or should I say the owner's actions.
PLEASE DO NOT BAND PITBULLS. I OWNED A PIT AND THAT DOG SAVED MY DAUGHTERS LIFE. I WOULDNT HAVE ANY OTHER DOG. DONT BLAME PEOPLE WHO LOVE THESE DOGS ONLY BECAUSE OTHERS WANT TO TRAIN THEM TO KILL.
Bull Terriers are loving family dogs by nature. Do not punish those of us who love and care for our animals properly. Instead, educate new owners at registration of the best way to raise this breed.
My best friend has one of the best mannered dogs I have ever seen and he is a pitt bull. Dave would not hurt a flea or a person. He is very friendly and loveable to everyone. It is all in way these animals are raised. Thank you for your consideration.
I am not a pit bull owner, however I do not feel a dog should be punished just because they have the capacity to be agressive. People can also be taught this type behavior and to eliminate a breed because of an owner's stupidity is ridiculous...
Terriers are a misunderstood breed to begin with, and it's downright irresponsible for the legislature to single out any dog based on breed for greater restrictions. A poorly trained, abused poodle is more dangerous than a well-trained, cared-for terrier. This is an example of the worst kind of knee-jerk legislation clogging up the State House.
Though I was sceptical when my daughter and son-in-law got a pit bull, they have raised this dog to be gentle and loving. If you ban pits, then you would have to ban shepherds, chows, rotts, st. bernards, and any breed who has ever been involved in a biting incident. These larger breeds are often trained improperly or abused. Don't make everyone suffer for the irresponsible few! Maybe children are next!!!!
you remember the phrase "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" the same goes for pits. pits don't hurt people, the owners that neglect and mistreat their pits hurt people.
As the owner of a gentle and loving bull-breed dog I am appalled that the Georgia legislature (my home state) is considering such a ban. These are wonderful dogs and unfortunately have become the target of bad owners. Please don't blame the dog by banning them; perhaps there are a few people in GA you could consider banning instead.
YEAAAA '''JENN''''
PITBULLS ARENT THE PROBLEM OF THE DEATH T OLL. PEOPLE ARE. THINK ABOUT THAT POLITCIANS'''' WE KNOW YOU WANT TO BE REELECTED FOR A JUST CAUSE . NOT A CALL JUST TO GET ELECTED....
Dogs like other animals are what you make them. We have had a Pit and it was the sweetest and well mannered dog we have had. It was so gentle someone stole him from our fenced yard.
