Pit bull terriers are good dogs. They simply require the proper housing, training, and experiance from owners. Do not punish these animals for the misdeeds of uneducated owners. There are several great pit bull owners out there, and several great dogs that DO NOT need to be muzzled just because they want to go outside of their yard. Support stricter fines and punishment for dog fighting and for vicious dogs, but banning a breed is NOT the answer.

I have a pitbull and she will not hurt or bite a soul. I have a cat in the house with her and she is scared of her. The cat can walk by and my pit will take off in the other direction. Any dog can be mean. Any dog can bite. If you treat a dog with respect than it will love and trust you. If you beat or mistreat a dog it will be mean to anything or anyone it comes in counter with. If pitbulls are ban than a boxer, doberman pinschers, chows, and any other "mean breed" should be ban too. Soon or later we will have a ban of dogs all together!

why dont we ban something important like child molesters before we waste our time and money on dogs that only do what they are taught by the most intelligent of all gods creatures. spend our tax money on something worthwhile please, like cleaning drugs out of our schools, let each individual decide what kind of pet they want. if you want to spend money on animal sanctioning, spend it on something useful, like more spay/nueter programs, or more programs to teach responsible ownership. get a hobby, get a life, just get out of mine.

being a vet tech, and owning several different breeds of dogs, pits included, i have encountered more biting incidents from small breed dogs, especially when children were concerened, than from larger breed dogs, unless the animals were trained by irresponsible owners, and this happens all to often. we, my husband and i currently own two pits, and two pit mixes, and have never had any biting problems from any of the four, or from any of our past pit bulls or pit mixes that we have owned, but then, we raise our dogs to trust and love, not to fight and kill, which is what alot of people do. why not have the representatives foster a pit, and after being around one of the gentle, intelligent, loving animals, after they and their families have gotten attached and grown to love this animal, let someone tell them they are going to take it away from them and put a needle in its heart and give it a shot of beuthanasia, humanely of course, just because it's a pit bull, and not a more acceptable breed. you keep in your home the kind of dog you love and trust, and leave me to make my own decision about what me and mine trust and have trusted, and what trusts us and loves us, without condition.

I feel that this is the worst bill to ever be presented to our government. We have far worst concerns that should be addressed. Pittbulls are not born with the nasty disposition that most try to portray them with. All APBT owners do not imprudently treat their pets as do these that train them to fight. It is a waste of a perfectly good animal. Their intelligence far exceeds that of an absent minded, aggressive fighter. So why should an animal lover like myself be forced to waivering my ownership of such a great breed of dogs when congress exculpates the acts of animal abuse committed by these heartless people? To me that isn't fair!

If this ignorant bill gets passed, it punishes the breed, and the people who love them. This bill will not punish the scum that acquires these animals for the sole purpose of raising them to be aggressive and fight one another to the death or the scum that beats the dog to death if it's beat in a battle, but survives it. This is the most absurd thing that I've ever heard and it demonstrates pure ignorance.

This was once America's Poster Dog! If the legislator's would do their homework instead of feeding into media disinformation they would find that pitbulls aren't the problem. It's either the owner or more than likely the cross breeding of bully breeds that has produced aggressive dogs that often are mistaken for pitbulls. the true pitbull is not a human aggressive dog. period.

IM AGAINST THE PIT BULL BAN. I have a Brindle Pit and a Red nose Pit and both of my dogs are very loveable and not violent. They are gentel with my two year old. Its the deed that should be punished. There are some irresponsible owners out there and they should be the ones punished. Pits are not the only dog that have attacked or bitten some one. People seem to only make a big deal when its a PIT. I think if they ban the PITS then they should ban all other breeds too. Just like any other dog worth having a PIT does protect. I just pray that enough people sign and this gets thrown out.

Just because a few of these animals have been involved in biting incidents we need to ban them? I've been scratched by cats and bitten by other animals so should we ban all animals anyone has been bitten by, NO! Pitbulls aren't mean naturally, they have the ability to fight, it's the owners who make them mean, so why don't we target this bill towards ownaers and not the dogs?

We keep him inside, and have "Beware of dog" signs, front and back.We are responsible for our dog.By the way, our small dog, bit 3 people, our large dogs never have. It`s not the dog, it`s the owner.

I oppose this ban. I am German and had to see how bans like this one destroyed breeds that suffered from a bad reputation and unfortunately sometimes attracted the wrong kind of clientele. It is not the dog but the owner that should be banned. Local and state governments need to enforce punishemnt on those that abuse the dogs, not repsonsible owners and breed ambassadors that pay with high dog taxes (Germany) and prejudice everywhere.

I support this petition completely. Punish the deed, not the breed!! This is supposed to be a 'free country'. Does that not include the freedom to own a specific breed of dog?? Instead of banning 'Pit Bulls' we should focus on the very people who abuse or neglect their dog (& other animals) and those that participate in illegal activities such as dog fighting. Charge them for their crimes!! Start at the source! Do not penalize the responsible pet owners. Focus on better enforcement of leash laws and other laws/ ordinances already in place on a local level to control or prevent futher problems, related to all dogs, from continuing.

RAY CLOSE said 03/10/05, 2:44 pm (verified)
This bill is a classic example of how media hype can steer the publics opinion. The actual standard for a pitbull is un-defined so the statistics often group a larger number of dogs under the designation of pit bull. This is unfair when it comes to dog bite statistics. If you were for example to compare the amount of staffordshire bites to rotweiller bites then you might have a fairer comparison. Rather than grouping lots of breeds together and calling them pitbulls, let the truth be known and start collecting real statistics. The media has hyped the public, and the public have hyped the politicians. It is truly criminal what is going on. Bull breed dogs if brought up in a loving enviroment will respond just the same as other canines. Unfortunately sometimes undesirable people (again spured on by the media of the TOUGH DOG syndrome) end up owning these animals and treat them accordingly. These are the ones that get portrayed as vicious. Pass a law for serious fines for cruelty to animals and enforce liscensing tests and council auditing/fining for ALL DOG BREEDS. This will solve the dog bite problem and lead to much happier owners and canines.

We own two dogs (a boxer and a black lab)...will they be next? How about punishing the irresponsible owners that don't take care of their dogs, treat them badly, train and raise them to fight, and treat their dogs to make them mean and aggressive? How about the ones that let them run loose and not on a leash...endangering them, to be run over by a car, or to encounter another dog or another animal? How about the owners that don't have their pets spayed and neutered...contributing to the already horrible pet overpopulation problem we have in this country? Any responsible dog owner that loves their pet wouldn't HAVE to have a law that makes them do these things! Don't blame the dogs...it's not their fault! Don't ban specific breeds...make OWNERS more responsible across the board!

I am an Animal Control Officer by profession and I have seen labs that resemble Cujo literally without the Rabies. Pitbulls are not the problem the moronic owners ( of all breeds ) are the ones that are at fault. as well as the media which trys to play on the emotions of the public by wrongfully blaming pitbulls for bites / attacks which are comitted by other breeds. It is ridiculous anywhere in anyway to ban any breed of dog. Pit bulls and many other animals are innocent companions and pets born or sold into the wrong hands for the wrong purposes. Yes, it is in the pit bull's heritage to be fought... but that is the past, and these animals are only vicious if so raised. it is not these dogs who should be punished and/or suffer the consequences of callous, irresponsible monsters who starve, beat, and otherwise maliciously mistreat these animals. ANY dog so treated could turn into a "bad apple".. and the true percentage of these "bad apples" within the pit bull breeds is no more significant than other breeds. It is people's stupidity and personal fears that give such a wonderful animal such a horrible reputation. No dog should be banned, but, without a doubt, NATIONALLY, the owners/and or fighters of any dog taught to be vicious, fight, and othrewise trained to attack other dogs and/or people should themselves be severly punished in a court of law. Do we nonchalantly turn our heads as people mistreat - starve, beat, kill -thier children?? Same as it could not be conceived as a child's fault for the mistreated suffered at thier panents hand, in no way is it the fault of a dog mistreated at it's owners hand. DO NOT PUNISH THE VICTIM BUT PUNISH THE OFFENDER!

Pits are mean unless their owners raise them that way. QUIT BLAMING THE DOGS AND BLAME THE STUPID AND EVIL OWNERS!
