I have owned many pitbulls over the last 25 years. I have never had a mean dog and would never keep a mean dog. I am an American. I have the right to own any type of animal that I can responsibly take care of. I do not believe my government should be wasting my tax dollars to discuss and legislate my ownership of animals. Please spend that time and money to mandate better treatment of animals and not in the attempt to make any breed or type of animal extinct. Mine is my best friend and my protection.
Please think again before you make this law, we in england already live under these rules my dog is my closest friend the best protector i could possibly have, he has more love and loyalty and personality than most people have or will ever know. When he passes on he will be my last pit ever as we can no longer breed them there is no more, this is a sad day for all dog lovers of any breed.
It is terrible that a breed is being banned and another freedom taken away because of irresponsible dog owner. PEOPLE are the problem, not a breed of dog. Lets be honest and put blame where it belongs.
Pit bulls are responsible for 1.88% of all registered bites. The number one family dog in the United States, Canada, and all of the UK, the labrador retriever, is at the top of the list. Why not ban labs?
Punish the deed, not the breed. Punish the irresponsible breeders and owners. Once the pit bull isnt on their list of choices, they will move along to something else. When will it end?
Hello again. If you are a Georgia State Representative then you should have already heard from me, but I am happy to meet again. :) One thing I have learned in my short time alive is that Americans prefer to go with the flow instead of learn about something. This attitude has been taken on by the people that, we the people, elected. Anyway, this is not about the disappointment of the government. I understand that there are dog attacks that are very upsetting; but these are small as compared to acts of domestic violence, child molestation and car accidents. So, why the outrage at an animal? Instead of banning the breed here are a few ideas...regulate breeding, punish irresponsible owners(the ones that are most likely to have the untrained, out of control, aggressive dogs), require microchipping and other forms of registration, for owners of powerful dogs require obedience classes. Any breed of dog can be dangerous. Funny thing is that my American Pit Bull Terrier has never growled, lunged, beared teeth or attacked another dog. He's had multiple 'family dogs' come after him though. Oh yes, the adventures of the vet and Petsmart. I would encourage you to read Pit Bulls for Dummies. Short read, informative and basic. Not expensive either. The local library might even be able to get it for you. Look at www.pbrc.net and www.badrap.com. Please do not punish the responsible owners with well behaved, loving dogs. Punish those who do not obey the laws. Putting a ban on a breed will NOT stop what has been happening. Who do you think owns the dogs that attack???? The people who don't care, the ones who won't be asking you to refuse this. I'll end with a quote from Amos Anderson..."I have found in my 70 years of life
that there are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners. If we were to pass
this bill, which dog would be next?"
Aymee Campbell
Proud and Responsible American Pit Bull Terrier Owner...also an American that uses her
Please learn the complete truth about the breed before you show such a predjudice! Check the breeds and the number of bites and you'll begin to see the truth. This is not a problem solver...you need to ban the people who do the fighting and over breeding and stop blaming the breed! These are excellent dogs when not abused, trained to fight or inbreed to the point of making physiological catastophies.
I have pitbulls and I love each and every one of them and I don't think banning the breed in a state is the solution to the problem. You have to start with all the ignorant owners first.
As a responsible owner of a Rottweiler, I find proposed bans toward specific breeds is an attempt of our leaders to band-aid the problem. Responsible breeding and ownership is the only resolution. Today it is the Pitbull they are unfairly targeting, tomorrow it could very well be your breed. Stand up for those that can not speak for themselves. Ban the deed, not the breed!
This will only cover up further the damage we as human beings have done to this beautiful breed. Start punishing the ones that are destroying the precious pit bulls, rather than aiding in their demise.
stop wasting time and taxpayer dollars. Pit Bulls are perfectly fine animals, and there is no reason why they should be banned in any way shape or form.
This is the dumbest bill proposal I have ever seen. Blame the pet's parent(s) not the pet. We own a rescue pitt because of her previous parent's neglect and couldn't have a sweeter dog in the world.
Put your "ban" on unresponsible owners, abusers and backyard breeders and the rest will solve itself. Arm yourself with facts, not hype. These dogs are NOT the problem. The "people" are! Banning Pit Bulls are not going to make these people better their lives, but "banning" these people will make life better for these dogs.
I live in Ontario Canada, they are proposing the same thing here. A pit bull ban, as a pit bull owner i am completely against it. Blame bad owners, not the breed.
Any dog can be dangerous, but if they are it is not the fault of the animal, it is the fault of the owner. We cannot ban owners, and we should not ban pit bulls.
sounds like a kneejerk reaction. What will the next House Bill be when the next attack is NOT by a Pit Bull? Forget this nonsense and just enforce existing laws.
Why not have tougher laws on the people who are abusing these breeds--the fighters and people who chain dogs. Make chaining a dog unlawful and enforce this law and the laws against dog fighting. Then you would not have an issue with pit bulls. The breed is extremely friendly to humans and they have a strong desire to please. With responsible owners, they are the most wonderful pets. It is only in recent years that some bad people have tarnished the reputation of what was once a revered companion dog in our country. Afterall, Petey on the Little Rascals was an AmStaff and he was the children's dog. Petey exemplifies what these dogs are really like with responsible owners.
I think this bill is simply outrageous. Perhaps a better solution would be required dog and owner training for ANY dog registered in the state of Georgia. To punish me and my dog for the actions of others is just idiotic.
why not ban owners? I am for responsible owners. I am a rescue owner of a mixed pit breed,it was horrendous how he was abused, but I could not ask for a better pet!!
My Pitty Lazer is the best thing that has ever happend to me and my family. Keep the breed alive and well and educate people on how to raise RESPONSIBLE dogs!
The legislation is sheer ignorance on behalf of the proposers. These are the most loving dogs I have ever known, have tougher sentences for the idiots who harm the dogs, or train them to be vicious, you can not discriminate against the dog. Just because some people think they look vicious doesn't mean State Representatives can use this genrealisation to ban a perfectly wonderful dog
I know people see pictures of kids with Pitbulls and I know they have had to here something positive about them. So it seems like they would have some kind of since to give Pitbulls a chance. But know because there simple minded people. I love Pitbulls and I wouldn't own any other kind of dog!!
It is human ingnorance and disrespect that is the problem here, not he Pit Bull. These are highly intelligent, kind, loyal dogs and implementing such a ban would simply demonstrate the ignorance of those who support it.
Let's see, who actually follows the laws already-someone who fights dogs or a loving owner who is responsible & takes their family dog to the vet when needed-Hmmmmmm, it's kind of a tough one, isn't it?
Please, before you go and approve a bill like this, do some research on this breed. These dogs are the most loyal, sweet and not to mention...adorble dogs in the world! It is a shame that some backyard breeders and irresponsible owners can cause such a downfall of a once revered breed. I have owned two Pit Bulls and I will never own another breed.
This is just stupid. I would just like to know how many of these law makers have every really encountered a Pit Bull-have they ever tried to get close to one to pet it or are they trained like the rest of America to be scared of them-to walk as far away as possible-I really think when ever a law is put down like this, these Reps should be made to spend time with a Pits-How can someone pass judgement on something they know nothing about? SMART DOGS DESERVE SMART OWNERS.
First off-GET THE FACTS-GO CHECK HOW PIT BULLS RANK AGAINST OTHER BREEDS THAT ALSO HAVE TEETH & CAN BITE. Second-GIVE HARSHER PUNISHMENT TO THE DUMB PEOPLE THAT RUIN IT FOR EVERYONE. Third-GET OFF YOU LAZY BUTT & DO YOUR JOBS. IT'S TOO HARD I GUESS TO GO AROUND GETTING THE "BAD GUYS", SO INSTEAD PUNISH EVERYONE WHO OWNS A WONDERFUL PIT BULL-THE "BAD GUYS" ARE THE MINORITY-YOUR AFFECTING MORE RESPONSIBLE OWNERS THAN BAD.
I SAY WE BAN CHIHUAHUA'S-I'VE SEEN MORE OF THOSE DOGS BITE PEOPLE THAN I HAVE PIT BULLS & WHILE WERE AT IT LET'S BAN POODLES BECAUSE I THINK THEY'RE UGLY. I KNOW LETS BAN ANY DOG THAT HAS 4-LEGS, THAT IS ANY OTHER COLOR THAN GREEN-GREEN DOGS ARE OK, THAT HAS TEETH & A WAGGING TAIL(LONG OR SHORT). I THINK I JUST SOLVED THE PROBLEM, NO?
Gestapo tactics such as this fail to recognize who the real monsters are. This is the same type of prejudgice and racist tactics perpetrated by you know who in europe. Food for thought, since the outlawing of dogfighting in 1976 there has been an INCREASE in the number of pit bulls in this country and cases of dog fighting. Before overzealous politicians began a crusade against them, most people didn't even know about the dogs. In the preceding years, the breed has risen to the 4th most popular breed in the country. Dogfighting remains a scourge to communities where it was once unheard of. Only outlaws now own and practice this arcane "sport". These people don't abide by the law anyway, therefore a new law will only be placed on top of the others that these people fail to abide by. If this ban is passed, you now turn thousands more people into outlaws because they own these animals as pets. These current owners take their animals to vets, buy licenses and provide revenue to the pet industry to support their charges basic needs. Do you really think that an outlaw would be so kind? I don't. If a person would break the law by owning a banned breed it is highly unlikely that this person would see fit to care for the animal in their charge. Bans of this nature do far more harm than good to a number of individuals. But the animals are the ones who pay the ultimate price, usually a premature, sensless death at the hands of "humane" organizations. Punish the guilty, not the innocent.
i was attacked buy a collie when i was 8 years old are you going to ban collies too NO!!!! of course not. i now owe 5 pit bulls. i have never seen a more loyal ,inteligent, loving, trusting, amazing breed of dog in my life!! and your blaming not just mistreated, abused, niglected, pit bulls but all pit bulls. my PITBULLS dont have a mean bone in there bodies! why should they be punished cause some stupid idiots that i dont even know wants to mistreat a pit bull to make it mean. that is who needs to be punished right there not the dog. Its not the dogs fault that he/she was taught to fight. THEY ONLY DO WHAT THEY ARE TAUGHT TO DO, JUST LIKE ANY DOG NO MATTER WHAT ITS BREED IS!!! why dont you ban german sheperds too they are taught to attack on command by the law inforcment.why should it only be pit bulls, hell why dont you go ahead and ban all dogs period, or hey i got an idea why dont we ban humans from the face of this earth, people attack other people and amimals all the time. you dont hear anyone out there saying stop all of the violence or i will ban humans. do you? no because people are allowed to make up lies like i was abused, or i was insane. well i think all pit bulls should not be banned anywhere. its decrimanation. its wrong to blame a dog for something that its owner taught it to do. PUNISH THE DEED NOT THE BREED!!!!!!
this is just CRAP! I have been a pitbull owner for years! And when the truth be known these poor dogs get a bad rep! They are the sweetest lovingest dogs ever! I also have a boston Terrier that is more of a bully than my pitbulls! PUNISH THE DEED! NOT THE BREED!
would iraq or afghanistan BAN a certain breed of dog? No, they were a free country.. america is NO free country if lawmakers do this.. government: do your job and keep out of the lives of "free" americans ... additionally, pit bulls aren't the problem, it's their upbringing... I could have my little rat terrior trained to tear your kids eyes out, so let's just ban ALL dogs... whatever.
The fact of the matter is that Breed Specific Legislation ( BSL ) does nothing to remedy the problem nor address the issue of animal attacks at its root cause - which is in most cases irresponsible pet ownership. Laws are already on the books to address these issues, but in most cases will go un-enforced thus allowing injurious incidences to happen. We must hold our municipalities responsible for their lack of enforcement of such laws. Every time a bill is proposed to enact Breed Specific Legislation ( BSL ), a legal suit against the community government should be filed for negligence in their enforcement of the responsible ownership laws that already exist on their books
This kind of legislation makes me sick. I've heard so much bad press about pits, it's unbelievable. It's time someone started showing the world the way pit bulls really are - and I intend to do just that with my website - www.geocities.com/dogride rs/DogRidersSociety .Take a good long look at my website - and then tell me how "vicious" pit bulls are. Punish The Deed, Not The Breed.
I am outraged at the potential reprecussions of such a ban. What breed is next German Shepards???my Toy Poodles? Labs???The possibilities are endless...I would love to see the same amount of time and effort put into stopping animal cruelty and neglect, as has been put into an unreasonable and totally unfair lumping of dog owners.Don't punish me and mine for the deeds of a few idiots. This ban not only infringes on my rights of property but also on my basic humane right of chcoice.Stop judging me by the actions of others.
Why punish a breed for what it is...When we have families that just live to do crimes and kill, we don't ban them from having kids and from living where they are loved...Why ban a dog just for being a Pit Bull?
Maybe instead of banning a dog breed that has been mistreated, misrepresented, and exploited, you should ban the idiots Exploiting, mistreating, and misrepresenting them. Dogs are what you make them, would you ban humans because someone made Jeffery Dahmer?
We have two pitts and they are wonderful. They were raised with my grandchildren in the house and I trust them completely. It is not the breed it is the training that has given this breed a bad reputation.
(We as citizens of The United States of America believe that we have the right to own any breed of dog we choose. We believe that irresponsible dogowners should be held accountable rather than blaming a breed of dog.) My sentiments exactly.) PUNISH THE DEED NOT THE BREED.!!!!
When you start banning breeds in a state you are discrimintating against us as humans. Guns kill people but its not the gun its the person behind the gun that is doing the harm. You punish the deed not the breed. People die in car wrecks everyday but are we banning cars.....no we are not. So why start trying to ban a specific breed of dog. Statistics show that you are more likely to be bitten by a Lab than a Pitbull. I have seen small dogs that did not weigh over 5 pounds that was more vicious than any pitbull I own. If you want to clean up the state of bad dogs then you need to start with the bad owners and it doesn't just start with Pitbulls. What's next how many children a person is allowed to have before you go and take away there right to bare children because from where I stand my Pitbulls are my children. Owner and Responsible Breeder
I am a proud owner/Mommy of a purebred female & a purebred male pitbull. I have never seen or had more loyal & loving pets. The people/owners who raise their pitbulls to be aggresive or to be fighters are the cause of the stigmatism related to this fine breed. Actions should be taken against these irresponsible individuals rather than the entire pitbull breed.
I could not have said it better than Debra (917) I have had a Pit for about 11 years and she is WONDERFUL. I love her and treat her with all of that love! My mother in law owned a daschund that i was very afraid of! That dog would bit you quicker than my Pit. I worked with a lady who lost her finger to her Basset Hound. We all have to remember that these are ANIMALS that WE have domesticated and they are still animals!
The "land of the free" is developing more laws governing personal choice more quickly than ever these days. I have had cause to fear & revile Pits after losing two cats to a pair allowed to roam freely by their negligent owner. I have also had the pleasure of a wonderful, gentle Pit that I willingly petsat for over a year. The long-term solution for those breeds deemed "aggressive" is to regulate the way these dogs are trained/handled & the owners' intent. Many people own breeds who have histories of violent or aggressive natures i.e. Dobermans, Chow Chows, and Rot's & have never had issues w/ their own due to vigilant & responsible ownership. As a Libertarian, I prefer personal accountability rather than gov't control. It's sad that those who refuse to take these precautions are merely providing citable justification to extremists measures such as that proposed by the Georgia Legislature. Whether you champion this cause for its' "apparent" purpose, realize that you are opening the door for your freedom of choice that much more. As wisely stated by a friend with firsthand knowledge of my personal experiences, PUNISH THE DEED... NOT THE BREED. You cannot let a negligent owner escape responsibility for failure to control their pet. Does the dog who attacks even know it's done wrong? Will the systematic "cleansing" of a breed remove the danger of aggression from dogs? Nope. Even small, seemingly gentle breeds can cause injury when provoked. Consider the long-term solution rather than putting a band-aid on such an important concern that has been allowed to fester unchecked for too long.
Please consider the points I have laid out here w/ the same objectivity in which they are presented.
Thanks...
What's next to the chopping block? Rotties or Dobermans? I'm sure we wont see Cocker Spaniels being banned anytime soon, even though they bite many more people than most dogs!
