Dear President Cotrell,

We are requesting that St. Mary’s University reject and return any and all money given to the university by the Department of Defense to study how to limit the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

As alumni and concerned citizens, we are troubled by recent reports in July 7, 2006 San Antonio Express News Article “St. Mary's to study limits on info law” that St. Mary’s would study limiting one of the most useful tools in assuring transparency in government as well as holding our government accountable to the people.

For over 40 years, FOIA has strengthened our American democracy. This grant seeks to weaken it. President Bill Clinton stated that this law was “enacted based upon the fundamental principle that an informed citizenry is essential to the democratic process and that the more the American people know about their government the better they will be governed. Openness in government is essential to accountability and the Act has become an integral part of that process.”

Contrast the President’s statement with that of St. Mary’s professor selected to oversee this money, Jeffrey Addicott, where he states when balancing civil liberties and security, the “balance goes toward security.” This is a gross oversimplification of this issue and shows a bias against protecting FOIA.

In times like these, many are quick to give away our liberties for the mere promise of security. Let us not forget that Benjamin Franklin once said, “Those willing to give up a little liberty for a little security deserve neither security nor liberty.”

America remains unique in the world due to our freedoms and open government. Please do not allow St. Mary’s University to violate its mission of social justice and civic engagement for the sake of a few silver coins.

Sincerely,

Mynor “Eddie” Rodriguez

Since one of the ideas is to split strings not into words, but hopefully into phrases more semantically informative than the words they are made of, doing that better should mean better suggestions, and avoiding what essentially are word n-tuples should make for smaller data and slightly faster querying.

I got the same tramadol attack... well, not the same, because it was only about 20 comments instead of 90, and i t have any filtering set up, and I just deleted them one at a time... hmm.. the only thing really in common was that it was about tramadol... what filter do you have set up that caught them all?
