Goal Progress:
The undersigned concerned citizens by this petition request that the NC Dept. of Transportation reduce the speed limit on NC 210 west to 45 mph going both directions out to the Welcome to Hampstead sign (roughly from Peanut Road to Rowan Road on NC 210). This is a stretch of about ¾ mile that is currently 55 mph.
Rationale:
There has been at least 1 fatal accident in the curve between Holiday Hills Drive and Berry Patch Road, and at least 1 life flight accident (unknown outcome) at Berry Patch Road within the last year.
Our rural mail carrier successfully petitioned to have our mailboxes moved down Berry Patch Road because of the number of near collisions with her mail car and the way I understand it is that she threatened to quit rather than get killed.
The school bus stops in this curve and the children walk across oncoming traffic. Most of the parents on Berry Patch Road are unwilling to let their children ride the school bus because of the threat to their safety in getting on and off the bus in this curve.
There is a blind driveway on the north side of this curve.
Children and physically disabled adult pedestrians cross the highway in this stretch between houses within the immediate Wuske family.
Residents and visitors to the families on Berry Patch Road and blueberry farm customers to Farmer Mac's Berries have complained about near misses with rear end collisions turning off of NC 210 onto Berry Patch Road coming from either direction.
What it would take:
There is already a 45 mph sign going west out of town just past Peanut Road. This sign could be moved ¾ mile to the new location.
There is already a 45 mph sign going east into town just before Peanut Road and a Reduce Speed Ahead sign a couple hundred feet beyond that. They could also be moved to the new location just at the Welcome to Hampstead sign.
Therefore, the only cost involved is the moving of the signs and if the state can’t afford the labor to move the signs, then we volunteer to do it on their behalf with someone’s permission.
