Turkmenistan is a beautiful nation located to the north of Afghanistan. It is home to nearly 5 million people. Since the 1990's, this former Soviet Republic has been headed by Saparmurat Niyazov, who has deemed himself "president-for-life". Niyazov is a lunatic with a personality cult who limits personal freedoms. In Turkmenistan, all religions except for Sunni Islam and Russian Orthodoxy are banned by the state, and all mosques and churches must carry the president's philosophy book. A 2006 report said Turkmenistan is only behind North Korea in regards to journalist censorship. All hospitals outside the capital of Ashgabat have been closed. Playing video games, listening to car radios, performing opera and ballet, smoking in public, wearing makeup on Turkmen TV, and even growing facial hair have all been banned in this country. Libraries are frequently closed. Turkmen police often use unethical torture and beatings. We must send a message to Niyazov that change must occur in this country. Thank you for your support.
