How do you describe a family that personifies love, and all the goodness that accompanies it?To know them is to love them…as they love (Randy’s love lives on!) the people around them. A match made in heaven – a devoted special education teacher and a champion little league coach who met, fell in love and married. Everyone celebrated…it couldn’t have happened to nicer people! Their great love for each other included their three sons from previous marriages, their adopted son (a student of Patti’s who became an orphan (temporarily) after his mother died,) and their three cherished “cherubs,” miracles of their love. They bought their “castle” a historic home in the ‘highlands’ part of Lincoln, RI. It needed TLC, but since that was their specialty, they bought it. They had a lifetime to return it to its original splendor…a ‘diamond’ in the rough. After just two years of wedded “bliss” (really) tragedy struck! Randy was seriously injured in an auto accident, caused by a drunk driver, and nearly died. His recovery was slow and painful…but Randy was determined. He would ‘walk’ his new baby and lead his little league team to a championship. It was his goal and no one could stop him. Patti and the children made sure! All their time and money was focused on Randy’s recovery…the house renovations and repairs were put on hold. After all, they had a lifetime ahead of them. Randy and Patti even forgave the drunk driver. Randy begged the judge for leniency. His rational- “everyone makes mistakes.” They worked hard, opened a restaurant, a place for a home cooked meal, and the Hien family celebrated their good fortune. Randy was alive and well. The future was bright! This past September, the incomprehensible happened. While trying to repair his truck, which had broken down on the side of the road, Randy was once again struck by a car but this time there would be no miracle- no celebration. Randy was gone…forever! But his spirit (seven children and wife) lives on. They need your help! While they NEVER complain the home that held so much promise…so much hope…is pretty hopeless! Their beloved home, Randy’s family’s home, is not safe and comfortable. It’s a terrible irony…a family that lived to make others safe and comfortable…is not. We need ABC’s help. Seven years ago, Harold Kushner wrote a book “When Bad Things Happen to Good People.” Its time ABC helped to rewrite the story and make it “When Good Things Happen to Good People!” We can’t do it without you!
