Picture this: You are three cars back from a red light. After a brief wait, the light turns green. Before you've even had a chance to take your foot off the break, the taxi behind you gives you a quick little "honk" to help you understand that the light has, in fact, changed.

Now picture living in a city (like Chicago) where this same thing happens regularly.

Then add to this picture the countless other scenes where taxi drivers find it necessary to honk their horns. Some examples:

They want you to run the red light so they can rush through it, albeit illegally, too;

Or they want to continuously remind the person they have been scheduled to pick up -- who, by request through an automated phone service, was told the person would be an additional 3-4 minutes -- that they are still outside waiting for them;

Or they demand that you MOVE, GO, or GO FASTER, regardless of the validity of this request;

Or just want to let people casually walking down the street know that the taxi is free and they are very happy to give them a ride...

All of these situations annoy, infuriate or otherwise disrupt our way of life, and we should have a say in the matter.

Some cities supposedly have laws against taxicab drivers using their horn, but I doubt many taxis honk at police cars and therefore their actions continue to go unpunished.

Proposing to ticket taxi drivers for horn usage is not enough; the horns must be physically removed from every licensed taxicab in every American city.
