This petition is to protest apple's reccent decision to use web 2.0 applications as the ONLY way for 3d party developers to create applications for the iPhone. This way of development limits many aspects of 3d party applications

First: in order to use a application you must be in a wifi/edge zone. Many areas are not yet covered by edge and you could loose your app if you suddenly enter a building or subway station.

Second: You can not use one app as a platform to use another one. For example, you cant download flash to play movies becuase the iPhone does not allow downloads of applications. Also, you cant run a older version of osx on the phone without bipassing the current system and erasing all program data

Third: This way of development will only increase they number of people that mess up their iPhones. Some users may try to install linux which will screw up the iPhone much more that just running 3d party apps.

4th: Apps on the web are usually not as good/complex as those you download. Most do not use fancy animations and are very limited in their functionality. This limits developers severly.

5th: Development tools just make things easier. Many mac developers have gotten used to apple made tools and SDKs, why mix things up now? I want to continue to have the ease of use that apple tools offer.

I just heard a few months back (in March) that Apple would finally launch an SDK for iPhone and iPod Touch. Up till then the only third party apps allowed on those devices were web apps which could not be stored or natively saved to the device. Now with the SDK and the upcoming App Store which was talked about more at the Apple World Wide Developers Conference 2008 event in June this petition in a way has served its purpose. The main reason for the SDK was people kept jail breaking their iPhones and iPod Touches to run third party native software being developed for these devices that would only work when the device was jail broken. However, Apple needs to loosen the rules on what apps can be accepted in the SDK program for iPhone and iPod Touch a tiny bit. To allow programs like Adobe Flash and the Mozilla Firefox web browser to run as an alternative to the mobile Safari browser included with those devices. Perhaps even adding some compatibility for Sun's Java may be nice. DO it in a way that it doesn't become a background process even when the app is closed. I in particular will be interested in games for iPhone and iPod Touch and mobile IM software like AIM on iPhone and iPod Touch. I already have bought games in the past through the iTunes Store for click wheel iPods and am enjoying them even now. I also hope the Touch Fighter game comes to App Store and/or is bundled with future iPod Touches and iPhones for sale.

i signed this petition because i agree with the limitations a browser app would cause. ie...the subway argument. this will turn businesses off and thats not good for the iphone.

As a developer for other mobile devices, I would love the opportunity to actually develop real client apps on the iPhone.

Although I applaud Apple's atempt to give Developers an option for creating apps on the iPhone, I don't think this should be the only way it's done.Web 2.0 apps work great for things like email and calendars, etc. but what about word processors or spreadsheet/excel-type apps. or games or even widgets. WiFi and EDGE work fine but what-if, as somebody mention, you go in a train, or god forbid a plane. It's lost. Applications should be installed directly onto the iPhone. And I believe Apple already has a secure and safe way to do this.iTunes.Apple should create a iPhone section (similar to Movies, Music, Games, etc.) in iTunes. this is the place where you can get all of your Ringtones, Widgets, Apps. iTunes can already manage apps in this fashion with iPod GAMES.Come on Apple. IMO your one of the greatest and most innovative companies in American history, please don't let a foolish mistake like this prevent you from acceling forward into a bright future of great products and partnerships with third party developers.

We really need the SDK to start making some real apps utilising cocoa and all the other goodies mac os x has to offer. Web apps don't take advantage of any of the benefits of os x. Maybe have a requirement that all 3rd party apps have to be sent to Apple to be check and approved, and then posted to iTunes or the Apple site. Bring the SDK!
