Advanced Placement Computer Science ("APCS") is an important institution at Ithaca High School ("IHS"). However, the administration claims it to be, as an elective, an unnecessary class, and wants to cut it down to one section, despite the fact that there are 37 students signed up to take it next year, with only 29 computers in the computer lab used for the class. This will force the teacher, Mrs. Teukolsky, to either teach a very oversized class with a shortage of computers, or, more likely, turn some of the prospective students down. We believe that, in doing so, the administration has not considered the best interests of the students of IHS. APCS is a very interesting and practical class which requires smaller class sizes to be taught effectively and allow a reasonable workload for Mrs. Teukolsky. This is a class in which many students find a career, and many others learn an important skill which they will use throughout their lives, as well as, in many cases, more immediately in summer jobs. This is also a field in which Ithaca High School excells, having claimed third place (of more than 20 teams) at the St. Bonnaventure Programming Competition for three years running, and second place in the National Java Competition for two. Cutting this class down to one section will have a huge adverse effect on many IHS students as well as damaging a venerable and outstanding institution at IHS. Thus, we ask the administration of IHS to reconsider cutting APCS down to one section.

I don't like how the little form thing won't let me make my own comment from scratch, and because emily is awesome yey, and because it took me more than a week to check my email!

as an IHS graduate, I feel that this course was possibly the most useful course I took at IHS. I am now a senior Computer Science major at Cornell, and the material I learned in Mrs. Teukolsky's AP Computer Science class is still fundamental to everything I learn. Moreover, the field of Computer Science is rapidly becoming one of the most useful fields both in academia and in the business world, and computer progamming skills are becoming helpful or even neccessary in virtually every discipline.

APCS is one of the most important classes that IHS can offer. This was the most useful and enjoyable class I've taken so far, and everyone interested in computer science should be able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Mrs. Teukolsky is an exceptional computer science teacher, and by cutting down the number of sections, IHS would fail to take full advantage of her talents.

because APCS is a great class and while Joe Wilson my call it "fluff" it is classes like this that specialize students towards a field early on and teach valuable skills that set students apart from one another.

there are more efficient ways to handle the budget than to cut courses. Also, school is for the students' education, and taking away an opportunity for some of these students defeats the purpose.

I just finished APCS, but I think that the class should be given much higher proirity in the future, if for no other reason then because computers are only becoming a more integral part of society.

IHS' APCS course is the primary reason that I'll be pursuing a degree in software engineering next year. I think it would be unfair to deny a similar opportunity to future students.

I support this petition because even though I'm not in it now, my brother took it, and I may be taking it in my later years at Ithaca High School.

I support this petition because this class has inspired a passion that I will carry with me well beyond high school.

the school's money needs to be handled better. Cutting down classes is NOT the way to go, as it hurts the students more than anything. Have the students in best interest? Rethink that statement before cutting anymore sessions.
