Goal Progress:
The death penalty is inhumane, discriminatory, costly, and ineffective. It is not only a violation of the human right to life, but also a racist waste of taxpayer money. Since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1977, 67 percent of the people on Illinois' death row have been of color and 35 African American defendants have been sentenced to death by all-white juries. Furthermore, if all death penalty cases since 1977 had been addressed through Life Without the Possibility of Parole, over $800 million could have been saved. It is time to promote racial equality before the law, save taxpayer money, and appreciate the sanctity of human life.
