To the Honorable, the Senate and the House of Assembly of the State of New Jersey, at Trenton assembled:

WHEREAS, Indian King Tavern in Haddonfield is one of New Jersey's most historic buildings, being the site where New Jersey was legally created in 1777, when clashing armies devastated Trenton and the Assembly reconvened in the Indian King to pass legislation officially creating an independent state and adopting a Great Seal;

AND WHEREAS, the Indian King Tavern became New Jersey’s first State Historic Site in 1903, and celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2000;

AND WHEREAS, legend has it that Dolley Payne – who later became First Lady Dolley Madison – was a frequent visitor to the Tavern throughout the 1780s;

AND WHEREAS, the building is a premiere example of eighteenth-century colonial tavern architecture;

AND WHEREAS, the Indian King Tavern has been revived as a museum in recent years, thanks in large part to the vision and efforts of William Mason, its "Innkeeper" (a state employee and Haddonfield resident), and a large number of talented artisans, generous donors, and dedicated volunteers from throughout the region;

AND WHEREAS, the Indian King Tavern, its Innkeeper, and volunteer docents play an important role in interpreting the history of the State of New Jersey, especially the Colonial and Revolutionary periods, to thousands of visitors each year, including a great many school children;

AND WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of New Jersey proposed – on April 1, 2008 (no joke!) – to close the Indian King Tavern as part of a plan to cut government expenditures;

NOW THEREFORE, WE THE UNDERSIGNED do hereby implore the Legislature to reject the Governor’s proposal to close the Indian King Tavern and to take prompt and decisive action to ensure its continued and adequately funded operation as a State Historic Park.

This is similar to the King\'s Tavern at Williamsburg. Do you think they would close that? No way.

Gov. Corzine should realize by closing landmarks like this, he is taking away the small amenities from the people who send the most taxes to Trenton.
