It has recently come to our attention that Viridor plans to build a 'Resource Recovery Centre' at New England Quarry Lee Mill, which is less than 2 miles from the town of Ivybridge which has a population of over 12,000 residents (15% of South Hams total population).

We understand that the proposal is for the processing of 275,000 tonnes of waste each year and includes plans for a landfill, an incinerator and also an ash treatment facility to produce 62,500 tonnes a year of aggregates for the construction industry.

We are concerned about possible implications of this facility on our health, environment and economy and therefore request a full public consultation to be completed before planning permission is requested or granted. We do not consider that the exhibition that took place at the Ivybridge Watermark on Tuesday 22nd September, 3pm - 8pm, as having been sufficient, as very few local people were aware of this exhibition. We request that this exhibition be held again and that all residents of Ivybridge be better notified of this event in writing, such as via a leaflet posted through their doors and by posters displayed in the local town centre.

We also request that a follow-up public meeting take place following the exhibition, to give residents the chance to discuss any concerns with Viridor and the local council, after they have had time to digest the information presented at the exhibition.

So is this what we get for being one of the best recycling areas in the country? At 12,00 Ivybridge has too many residents to suffer this potentially hazardous risk. (Yes, I do know it is supposed to be safe, but the basic process produces masses of Toxins, and only technology and human operators will stop it getting to us residents. We all know that technology breaks down and human error happens – sadly only too frequently) With our excellent record of recycling there is not so much of our waste to burn. An incinerator will need feeding from far away - so we will have increased traffic pollution too. Oh! And by the way, you still have to do something with the waste ash. Don’t tell me it can be used – Imerys has masses of granite chippings it can hardly give away. Excellent material for the building industry, but the transport costs are too high to take it anywhere sensible. The incinerator’s waste ash will have to be taken somewhere – and at a financial and pollution cost. If it were the only solution it might be different, but it’s not. For example, we have masses of enormous holes in the ground all over Devon and Cornwall. Instead, why not bring in laws to force the mining companies to fill their holes with unrecyclable waste instead of leaving them unused? If we have to have incinerators, take a leaf from our ancestors and put it on the coast to ensure the wind takes waste fumes away from humans. At such a location we also could do what Singapore has done, build an ecological landfill island, a tourist attraction and wildlife reserve from the ash. Even better, put the incinerator(s) in North Devon, away from large populations and use the ash to build a nature reserve across the Severn estuary which can then be turned into a tidal energy project to supply 10% of Britains needs? Think big you little men. France built their tidal energy project 40 years ago!

I support this petition. I\'m concernerd about the proposed siting of the incinerator; the effect that the prevailing wind direction will have on air pollution levels in the west of Ivybridge and also the increased level of road traffic in the area.
