My heart goes out to the "Jag" family...as far as the "Professional " handlers, I feel they should be prosecuted to the fullest by law for cruelty to animals and be ban by the judge from ever showing another dog, AKC or other wise. All this could have been advoided by using common sence, as "Professional " handlers, they should have known better! This is for you Jag & your family.
This is horrible. This is a wake up call for owners that use professional handlers they will never love the dog like the owners will. Also, there is a little piece of equipment that costs like 3 dollars that will keep this from happening. I hope the handlers will be sued and no one else will use them. Unfortunately, if they win no one will care.
It is very sad that a rule is necessary to prevent such a needless death ... common sense alone should have prevented it, however, following the loss of JAG I do hope that a rule is created and put into immediate action! I sign, In Memory of JAG!
Can't the AKC make it a show rule not to leave dogs tied to a grooming table? Violators would then have to answer to AKC. I show pure bred Siamese cats in CFA
I know that the safety of the cats come first with CFA.
I hope that AKC will do something to prevent other "Jags"
This shouldn't even need to be an issue...I suppose the world will always have people in it who need the threat of punishment to remember to have common sense.
An outrage that defies reason. A horrible tragedy that should never have happened followed by apparent criminal intent to cover up and misdirect. My heart goes out to Jag's owners.
I, for one, will be speaking up at dog shows when I see an 'unattended' dog on the table! At the very least find the AKC/Superintendent Rep. I cannot image the owners greif over the month everyone was searching for Jag and then to find out the horrible truth that all their efforts were in vain because of the handlers lying. Disgusting!!!
Sorry to hear that this happened at a show. It happened once to a friend's dog. She had him leashed on back deck about 2 ft high. She saw him dangling and quickly retrieved him--he was okay! She shortened his leash!
Sorry to hear that something like that could occur at a show. I thought they were watched very closely. That almost happened to a friend's dog, when he was leashed on the back deck at his home. The owner saw him hanging there, and quickly retrieved him, unharmed.
this is something I have worried about for all my years of showing. I see dogs on tables unattended all the time. It is a wonder this has not happened more often, and of course the handlers try to hide what happened. It is time that this were a punishable offense. Dogs can be stolen as easily as one died. So many breeds of dog are not protective and will just go with anyone. Rules and legistation against this sort or thing should be in place!!!
It is unbelieveable to me that this is even an issue! Common sense just tells you that this is wrong! You don't leave a baby alone on a change table!
Such a tragic loss, my sympathies to Jag's family. 10 - 20 feet is too great a distance, the handler should be within arm's length in order to catch a dog falling/jumping off the table.
Rule of thumb has always been to never leave any dog unattened on a grooming table.
These handlers should be fined and never be allowed in a show ring with any dog.
This is unexceptable behavior!

This is the most unprofessional issue with a dog handler I have read in a long time. I can't not believe that someone would do this to another person's show dog or any dog. These person's should never handle dogs again!!!! Bar them from AKC shows for at least 10 year or more. Never leave a dog on a table, and turn away. They could slip and break a neck or end up like this one. If you are 10 feet away you can't grab it. If you have to leave the dog or turn away from it, put in the the crate!!!! Anything beyond a arms reach is too far away.
The actions of the handlers are inexcusable, and withholding this information from the owners is reprehensable. They should have at least admitted their true nature, murders.
This is a rule and as such this SHOULD NOT have happened. Handlers need to be more aware of the dogs in their possession and PAY ATTENTION! At 4-H dog shows were not even allowed to use the noose because this can happen.
My heart goes out to the family of Jag.
So many times you see dogs at the shows which sit for hours on the grooming table with nobody to watch them.
And many a times I have seen them jumping down when other dogs go by.
There are good Handlers...and bad ones..and you just have to pick careful whom you trust your dogs to.
And when you see that a Handler has more dogs then he can take care of...that is a good one to stay away from.
And AKC should put a stop to leaving the dogs alone on Tables at the shows.
They have a AKC Rep at every show...let them go around and check the set ups every once in a while
That would have prevented the loss of a beautiful dog.
