In the past 10 - 15 years, walleye populations have declined drastically in the Kawartha Lakes including Rice Lake, Sturgeon Lake, Balsam Lake, both the Buckhorn Lakes, Scugog Lake, and many others.

In 2007 the OMNR will be introducing new Fisheries Management Zones. Zone 17 of their proposed changes includes all of the Kawartha Lakes and is centered around Peterborough, Ontario.

While there are changes to the seasons and limits of walleye in that zone, there is nothing being done about crappie in their proposed changes.

It has been identified in various studies by the OFAH (Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters) and also the OMNR themselves that crappie, an introduced species to this area, are the main factor in the decline in walleye stocks in the Kawartha Lakes. The crappie are found to be feeding in the very same areas the walleye are spawning. They are eating the premature walleye before they can grow large enough to head to deeper water and become spawning fish themselves. This in turn means far less successful walleye spawns, and far more agressive crappies taking over prime walleye spawning areas.

As it is now, the season for crappie ends November 15th and starts again the last Saturday in April.

By opening crappie as a year-round fishery in the kawarthas, we would be allowing the predatory and invasive crappies to be harvested and give the premature walleye a better chance at reaching maturity.

If you are an angler that has ever fished this area you will know how important the walleye fishery is and why this step must be taken in keeping the walleye fishery great for years to come.

This petition, once signed will be sent directly to Ontario's Minister of Natural Resources.

With your co-operation, we can make a difference for 2007 and improve the state of the walleye fishery in the Kawarthas.

I actually don't support this. I've fished (and lived) in the Kawarthas my entire life and I've never caught a crappie... only bluegill. Many of the Kawartha lakes just plain out suffer from too much pressure (especially Rice) from meat hunters.

This is a start, but more research is needed on the effect of the zebra mussel.
