Steven Bériault known to his friends as Kaptus lived on the streets of Ottawa for the past 4 years.

Kaptus is respected and loved by many on the street who thought of him as their brother.

The violent death of Kaptus on June 14, 2006 at the First Bridge (corner Rideau St. and Sussex Dr) brought great sorrow to his street friends.

Kaptus’s street friends want to paint a mural in honour of Kaptus at the place of his death along the south wall under the First Bridge.

Kaptus’s street friends want to plant perennial flowers around the First Bridge on his birthday July 18 to show respect for Kaptus.

Kaptus’s street friends want the First Bridge named the Kaptus Bridge.

We the undersigned want the First Bridge to remain open and for Kaptus’s street friends to secure rights to paint a mural and plant flowers there in his honour.

I came to this city just a short while back. I rented a room first in back-packers then to the "Y" where there were a great number of people living in truly unfit conditions. Though had a roof over there head; but, they were trying. I also found that the people on the street in Ottawa are nothing like the ones in Vancover, this is differnt city and the majority of them are not out to harm anyone. Though I feel that youth that have made themselves homeless are the ones to look at if you looking for problems and they are going to create the problems. On that note there are the youth that are homeless for other reasons that are trying to work within the system and they need to be congradulated for doing so.

I know many of the street people and i love them and it is important for them to have a memory of Kaptus he was there friend and anyone that knew him cared for him and want to remember him.So this is the way they want to remember him. I support it 100%

I support this petition because we are no longer working uder reasonable, fair and just conditions when it pertains to people living in poverty conditions. We had such a long way to go wity equal justice, so until then.

I am a supporter for the simple fact that everyone has lost someone and each way they are remembered. If this is the street way well then so it be.

I support this petition for many reasons. First, it is important for Kaptus's friends to remember him. Also, when any other person dies, the friends and family can have a memorial for them whether it be at the site or elsewhere. Additionally, this is home to many street people and why shouldn't they have a right to memorilize someone in their home?

I recall how the whole country was up in arms over the youth who pee'd on the war memorial and rightly so. Why is it then that when a homeless youth dies, the City of Ottawa cleaning crew or the Ottawa Police can go in and remove a memorial without even blinking an eye, stealing the personal possessions and a petitition with over 1,000 signatures on it.

I went by the Rideau underpass where the homeless have taken shelter during their protest. When I saw that everything that was meaningful to them was removed my heart sank. What gives the police city the right to deal them such a low blow. They are peaceful individuals. I meet them on Canada day and on a few occassions to help. They have feelings like everyone else.

They should give everyone a home. They should be able to have paintings on the wall for their friend and flowers. It will help his family also.
