Kentucky Infertility Insurance Mandate

Created by Cynthia Repanshek on 11 March 2006 @ 7:43:26 PM

We, the undersigned, are requesting the State of Kentucky to enact an infertility insurance mandate. Currently, 15 states in the U.S. are required to offer or treat infertility. These mandates were designed to make conception more affordable (and less emotionally draining) to the 1 of 6 couples that struggle with the disorder. Studies in mandated states have shown that infertility mandates do not greatly increase premiums. In some respects, the mandate helps to save health care dollars. In non-mandated states, since women and men cannot afford more than one cycle, they may dangerously request to transfer more embryos than may be safe. As a result, they may become pregnant with multiples, increasing the cost of prenatal care, delivery, and neonatal intensive care. With multiples, women are usually required to be on bed rest, causing insurance companies and employers large losses. Furthermore, in mandated states, infertility treatments are more successful and less risky for the mother and child. Without the assistance of insurance to pay for treatments ranging from medications to IVF, many people will never experience the joy of pregnancy, childbirth, or watching their child grow. Current legislation deems pregnancy and childbirth as "unnecessary" and "optional". Without children, there is no future and by denying infertility treatment, you are robbing millions of people from a future full of laughter, happiness, and potential.

11Sarah AliPlease take into consideration the pain of never being a parent. Please help those of us who have done the right things in life and feel as if we are some how being punished... The word barren is the most painful word in the world!
10Cathy Krajenkeins pays for lung cancer for smokers, for bariatric surgery for overeaters, heart surgery for Big Mac eaters, but won't pay for 2 educated, tax paying citizens to enjoy parenthood like everyone else.

8natasha harrisbecause insurance should not have that much power over me.
7Angela WrightNo one can know the pain of not being able to have a child of your own until it happesns to you. Please allow people in this extremely difficult position the opportunity to get treatment without having to pay a fortune out of pocket. So many people cannot afford the treatment and are effectively financialy excluded for any treatments options.
6Nicole MartinI am one of those women who suffered infertility when it wasn't necessary because Insurance providers controlled my health care more than my doctor.
5Shannon BI am one of those 1 in 6 and need this to be covered.
4Karalee Alvey
3R. GoodeThis needs to covered under medical insurance.
2Amy WilsonInfertility is a medical condition that should be covered by insurance companies
