Dear Mr. President, We are a few students writing to you concerning environment. Our science classes have researched and discussed the environment and the negative effect certain chemicals have on the environment. We were wondering why we are, the United States, still polluting the air with highly potent, intoxicating chemicals such as Mercury. We have researched what mercury does and it is very dangerous. Mercury, once it is in a living cell, it is impossible to get out. Mercury causes permanent brain damage, and with mercury in the air, we are not safe to breathe. In Alaska, drilling for oil would kill animals, pollute the air, and even cause an intense amount of climate change by rising the temperature dramatically. It would be a sure way to let the rest of the world to know >that we are money hungry and have no regard for the environment. Instead of drilling for oil in Alaska, why haven’t you put more emphasize on development of alternative energy sources that do not emit greenhouse gases. Seeing that the United States is responsible for 25% of the WORLD’S greenhouse gas pollution, it makes us ask why the United States is not doing anything to stop this man made disaster. We think that if the United States would join the Kyoto Protocol agreement and follow the agreement, the world would be much better off. You have so much influence over Congress, maybe you could think of how great the Kyoto Protocol agreement is and how it would improve the air. We believe that the United States should join the Kyoto agreement. The fact that 178 other countries have signed the agreement makes me ask why we haven’t. When factories pollute the air with greenhouse gases, it is a public health hazard. We know that some factory emission standards need to be more environmentally protective. Global Warming is a man made disaster. We definitely need cleaner air in the United States of America. Global Warming, as you should know, causes the climate to rise. Global Warming needs more consideration, it is very dangerous, even though some people do not realize how bad it really is. Global Warming endangers animal habitats, especially in the Arctic and is also known to increase the occurrences of tropical storms and hurricanes, so not all hurricanes are natural disasters. We know that the United States is a major problem for the world’s ecosystem. We hope you take our letter into consideration. In the beginning, we are asking that Congress and yourself consider more strict, federal emission standards and laws against factory pollution. Please do not drill Alaska and consider and join the Kyoto agreement. If you would > respond without a form letter, it would be appreciated. We ask for a no form letter response because we really want to know your views on this topic.
