'Lads Mags' (FHM, Front etc) - covers and contents are as explicit as 'top shelf' porn *

Yet they are not age restricted. Indeed weeklies such as Zoo/Nuts are aimed at teenage boys (and boys as young as 11/12)

And they are typically displayed at eye level - often next to children's items and promoted widely throughout shops.

We call on all responsible retailers (supermarkets and petrol staions) to treat 'lads mags' as soft porn - to display them, covered, on the top shelf. And that retailers with a no-porn policy (such as 'ethical COOP') not to stock them at all.

* For a comparison of FHM and PLAYBOY contact www.object.org.uk or ido@object.org.uk

I live in a society where racism and homophobia are met with horror but sexism and misogyny are not only tolerated but celebrated and encouraged. I am truly sick of Britain\'s apathetic attitude and a whole generation of women aspiring to be glamour models or pole dancers to get a quick ticket to celebrity. Its regressive, sick and degrading to women as a whole.

because it's so hypocritical. I have nothing against porn but this is trying to disguise it as everyday reading as if it was all quite normal and assumes that men are not interested in anything other than the female anatomy. It shoves sex down people's throat and cheapens it when it should be something special and mysterious. People WILL tire of it eventually I'm sure. Oh, and I really don't need to see that stuff everytime I'm buying a pint of milk!

I support this petition, because I don't like my kids being exposed to this type of magazine when we go into a newsagents.

for many of the reasons that have already been cited - it impacts on womens' (and girls') self esteem and body image and reduces womens' 'worth' in both their own, and men/boys' eyes, to their physical appearance. This material needs regulating.

The women in these magazines are letting down the female population.

I wholeheartedly support this petition! Many parents do not want for their children to be exposed to these magazines that make sex look like something slutty and dirty while they are at the store. Even if older kids already know what sex is, I don't think it is right for them to see it displayed as anything but a natural, loving act between two people. Also, many women do not want to see other women portrayed as sexual objects instead of human beings. If people want to publish these sleazy magazines, they need to be hidden from the eyes of those who do not need or wish to look at them.

I support this petition.I am sarahs boyfriend and I am truly sorry for buying all these mags and I nearly lost the most important woman who ever came into my life because of them. They caused me to lie to her and i really felt guilty and ashamed because of them! The women in these mags do send out the wrong message to young men and some men do believe this is how women are expected to behave! Ive seen the error of my ways and now i want them moved and even the lesser mags to have age restriction on! Natural women are always the best not these false tarts in these mags-who needs them? gregxxxxxxxx

Well, I'm not saying that men shouldn't have something if they desperately need an image to sort their frustration out, but I just wish these mags etc. weren't always rubbed in my face! before me and my botfriend started going out, he collected a lot of these mags and never got rid, in fact he had a whole draw full, shelf full, strays in a wardrobe and even 2 calenders to go with them. When we started going out he saw how much I didn't like them (mainly coz the amount freaked me out!) and he said he no longer needed them anyway so he offerred to get rid, saying he was over that phase! Anyway, he very thoughtfully began to get rid of them, except he told me at one point that they were all gone before I got to his house again! Thing is he hadn't actually got round to getting rid of them all and rather than just tell me he hid them from me, however I gradually found out-bit by bit, pile by pile in a very cruel and hurtful way and we almost split over it! Not only this but I found out that he had still used one to ease frustration, although he assured me he was thinking of me at the time (in all fairness the girl he looked at was nothing special and it was coz she was wearing something he likes to see me in!). Well, anyway we've resolved our differences, the mags are gone and in fact my bf really dislikes them himself now! The problem I have is that since all this happened I can't escape them, I even got a multi media message sent to my phone advertisind FHM and the opener was Girls! Girls! Girls! I mean that phone could have been owned by a child! Also every respectable mag I pick up advertisies these girls on the inside cover, saying get girls on your phone. Every time I turn on the net, it advertises FHM or some other mag and there have been heaps more experiences and I'm sick of it being rubbed in my face! By comparison any men advertised were only shown from waist up and in a frontward pose-

Not only are these magazines teaching men to disrespect women, it brainwashes them into thinking that loveless, pointless sex will bring happiness just so they can make a quick quid. These magazines warp people’s understanding of sex and the female body by only showing airbrushed images which don’t exist and describing sex in derogatory terms. It’s this sort of thing which inhibits people from ever leading a truly fulfilling sex life. Its about time men stood up and were "men" in choosing to say no to these magazines which sell empty promises and belittles women and men alike.

Marion: I agree that sex is not something that we should hide- i is an important part of loving relationships. However these magazines do not reflect this. They reflect young girls being used by fatcats to make money, and for men young and old to perve on. It also leads young women to believe that to get a boyfriend they must dress provocatively like the women they see men in their lives lust after. Then they go out wearing next to nothing, then in some cases are abused and raped. Its a visious cycle, and one that should be ended immediately. Men should appreciate and pour their love onto their wives, and have sex for the right reasons.

I agree with the aims of this petition. We should be learning to love and respect each other, not continuing to objectify women. What century is this?!!

Why is it that everything labeled for "men" has half-naked women attached to it - when you look at the women's magazine section you see fashion, family, recipes, home improvement - and then you look over at the men's section and its cars and half naked women? Why don't you see half naked men for the women to look at?? Because men are disgusting insensitive pigs who only think with what's south of the border. I can't stand it!!! Wonem's magazines talk about your relationships and how to enhancethem, etc. - while men's magazines try to make you forget that you have a relationship with all the external stimuli they throw in your face. I always say "women are from Mars and men are from URANUS!!!!!!!

I agree. I think in maybe 20 years kids as little as 6 or 5 will be drawn in by this. Though I doubt it, I hope signing this petition will make a difference, but there are so many who have been drawn in by this already and would oppose you.
