On March 21, 2008, the Courier-Post reported that Camden County has awarded a contract for $313,000 to U.S. Security Associates, a Georgia-based company, "to provide [two] security officers in the Haddon Township branch" of the Camden County Library System. In addition, "the main branch in Voorhees has three guards and each additional branch has one."

We, the undersigned, petition the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders to justify the need for this type of security at its public libraries and to provide details of all occasions during the past five years when the security and safety of County Library facilities, employees, and/or members of the public were jeopardized by the absence of this type of security.

I don't mind having security guards present, but am very disturbed by having my bags cheked on the way in to a small library. I don't have my bags checked when I go to the grocery store! Also, the guards are usually busier talking to each other than they are paying attention to the patrons.

funny how their commitment dies when it is book sale week. I could carry a Sherman Tank in and nobody even looks twice as long as Im holding money. On a good day they might look up from reading a book to notice I'm standing there with my hand bag exposed ready for the humiliation of a search. What is next, a full cavity search?

This is ridiculous. Women are the primary target. When book sales are in progress, no searches are done. This is just another invasion of privacy.

This money could be better spent funding our local police departments.

Municipalities may loose police service in the current crunch, and the County spends money on minimum wage blue shirts when there is no need -- is the Freeholder Board even listening.

This is yet another riduculous waste of money. The Camden County dems seem to think they have a never ending personal bank account at their disposal. I for one am tired of it. You just don't see this crap going on in neighboring counties. Where does this pompus disregard come from? Years of fleecing the public obviously!

I was shocked to hear of security guards at the library. I see no need for protection at a library.

This is the craziest thing I ever read. What is our country coming to, if we need security guards at our public libraries? The County Library System just lost longtime patron.
