Budget needs for FY 2007

Dear Congresswoman Naomi D. Jakobsson,

I am writing to you on behalf of the petitioners signed below, regarding the current condition of Lincoln Hall, a campus building at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The third capital priority of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is Lincoln Hall remodeling ($50.8 million). Presently, the building is in poor condition and its structure continues to deteriorate to the point that it adversely affects the learning environment of students and faculty. The deteriorating condition of Lincoln Hall poses a hazard to our physical and mental health and its present state is unacceptable for a prestigious university.

Lincoln Hall is the third most frequented campus building yet maintains its original systems since built at the beginning of the 20th century. Students and faculty pay the price for its poor upkeep. Poor ventilation, uneven and cracked floors, and crumbling ceilings are only a few threats to our health. To provide students and staff with quality state of the art facilities, we ask that the Illinois General Assembly address the renovation issue of Lincoln Hall.

As tuition payers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, we hereby petition the Illinois General Assembly to increase funding for the renovation of Lincoln Hall in the amount of approximately $10 million, half of the higher education budget, for repairs, renovation, and maintenance costs of Lincoln Hall.

Increased public funds will aid the university in renovating Lincoln Hall and provide its students and staff with an improved and more productive learning and work environment.

Thank you, in advance, for your time and consideration.
