I don't see the point of suppressing young bands and talent to playing the same venue over and over never making any money. Its impossible enough to make a living out of music in Australia and yet we still manage to turn out some of the best artistic talent out. If we remove the obstructions holding the talent back, it will be much better for society in general
because I am a musician, and I enjoy playing live and listening to live music. Economics is already against live music, especially larger 'big bands'. Let's not let ridiculous government regulations further live music's demise.
I enjoy going out to see live music and supporting local bands. I have plenty of friend who play at multiple entertainment venues in Sydney. Because of the amount of residential areas developing around local entertainment venues this is now becoming a problem with the ability to see live music being performed. For example, Luna Park in Sydney was a main family venue where people could go and have fun and enjoy riding on the theme park rides. However, due to the residential appartments being built next to the theme park it has lead to the closure of multiple rides, the hours of business to be reduced and at one point the theme park was closed permanently. We all know what can happen to a theme park, maybe one day this could happen to a local pub in which we enjoy watching our favourite band play at every thursday night. This petition should also recognise that due to urban sprawl and the introduction of more appartment buildings being built in well established areas, maybe we should be also considering a petition against the approval of such buildings to be introduced into certain areas instead?
because live music deserves a place in our culture. Too many venues have closed down becuase they cannot get a liscence or complaints force publicans and owners to stop having live acts!
because being a musician used to be a job you could do everynight of the week. Now it seems harder than ever to persue a meaniful and financially viable career in the Australian Music Industry. We need to start supporting our young talent again! Where is the next ACDC, INXS or Cold Chisel going to come from with so few venues for young acts to perfect their craft?
I support this petition because not only is live music an important part of Sydney's cultural life, but it also gives aspiring musicians the opportunity to gain experience in performing before live audiences. Experiences like this have given birth too many Australian artists who have gone on to world wide recognition.
This is such a worthwhile cause!! It is very relevant to me at the moment because I have been promoting my band throughout many venues across Sydney. Many of these venues would love to have live music but simply do not have the resources to invest in the long and expensive process of obtaining a POPE licence. I used to work in local government and I have first hand experience of how long and expensive this process is. If these laws were changed, I know that I would be performing several times per week. With the laws the way they are, I am lucky to be performing once per week.
My recent experience has shown me how dire the situation is and I'm really grateful that the subject is being given serious attention.
live music is an important part of Sydney's cultural life. There are too few venues able to compete with Poker machines. Over regulation puts venues off making the effort. I support any measures that will facilitate greater support of live music in all itys forms - especially smaller venues with more intimate accoustic acts.
Live music is part of a vibrant inner city life, it should not be regulated for those who really want to live in the suburbs..
I have the good bad and the extremely ugly buskers outside my door in Newtown but that's part of the parcel....sometimes you get lucky... sometime you head out for a coffee ;)
It's patently ridiculous that one resident or neighbour's complaint can be sufficient to derail an application for an entertainment licence, especially when it often comes from somebody who's moved in next to an already well established, longstanding pub, club or music venue.
Perhaps control stupidly loud bands and increase the level of and decern reason of complaint required before vetoing a life performance venue that has been enriching many peoples lives in an area for many years. A little sensibility , please.
the artistic side of life in Australia is only an appendix in comparison with sport and business. the arts are vital for a healthy society. So it's gotta change!
I think it's great to see people standing up for what they believe in! Especially for a cause as just, and culturally significant as music. Keep up the great work and hopefully we'll beat this one together!
How ironic that in 2006 school current curiculum more than ever encourages and emphasises the importance of the arts through more subjects in music, drama, film etc education but in fact for budding musicians 'they will be all dressed up with no where to go!' due to these archaric and rigid licencing regulations!! We really aren't the clever country!
because I love live music & appreciate being able to listen to the amazing musicians we have here in this country! Keeps a healthy & happy culture...among other OBVIOUS & IMPORTANT reasons.
I hate to bring up the Sydney Melbourne rivalries but it is clear that the licensing laws in Victoria let art and culture thrive. Something that Sydney could really do with a dose of.
